7 Best & 7 Worst PC Games

7 Best & 7 Worst PC Games

As I win several games on the tough level (in this case GC2), I begin to get bored (no reflection on the excellent GC2). As with all fine games, Chess, Poker, Talonsoft series, after a while I look forward to the next generation of new PC Games.

While waiting, I like to discuss how we gamers like our PC games. Sometimes I learn of a game I have not heard about & will enjoy playing.

I wonder what our finest & worst game lists include.

I begin. I recognize that my choices will not necessarily be your choices.

The Best

1. Talonsoft military series (West Front Elite) etc. All turnbased. Verbs are not needed here. Needed more programming & army groupings were often too large & ai/programming was lacking. The artwork was brilliant.

2. Age of Empires 1 & 2. RTS that was balanced & worked. The later Age games were unbalanced & therefore unplayable by me. Additionally, RTS is not my faorite genre.

3. Chessmaster series.

4. Myst # 1 & Syberia 1 & 2. Too many puzzles had nothing to do with the plot. Artwork was brilliant.

5. The latest Hoyle Casino. Finaly got the rules in Texas Holdum right.

6. Hearts of Might & Magic 4. It worked

7. Tropico. Poor Fidel & Che. Nice artwork, music. After you developed 1 island, the game got repetitious.

The Worst

1. Paradox games. All. They have yet to produce a game. What they release is always bug ridden. Shortcuts, only hire one blind programmer at $1.50 an hour. Don't like the conquer the world stuff. Latest Europa 3 has no historical events;-Need I say more?

2. Totalwar. Shogun was decent; went downhill from there. Don't like the conquer the world stuff. I realize that others have higher opinion of Totalwar. The only opinion that counts on this planet - is yours.

3. Balders Gate. Beautiful artwork, but my heroes & heroines kept dying. Never made it to town of Balders Gate. It was the best of the hack & Slashes.

4. MOO3

5. Lords of the Realm 3. #2 had unbalanced economy that ruined a promising game. #3 had some brilliant concempt changes, but the $budget$ ran out & LOTR3 was released unfinished.

6. Civilwar Generals 1 & 2. They couldn't master the simple art of having units SHOOT. They only pushed, or charged. Had potential.

7. The whole genre of shooters.

These are only partial lists. The wife hates all my games. She thinks life is about hard work, responsibility, courage, & properly raising our kids. I love her, but she's not perfect. I'm interested in your favorites/worsts. Your choices will reveal much about your personality.

Wow, no offence or anything, but your list is one of the worst best and worst games lists I've ever seen. If i was stuck on a desert island with only those 7 best games to play, I'd be bored out of my mind. You put the total war series on your worst list. There are hundreds of crap games on PC and you choose to put a series that revolutionised the strategy genre.
I therefore conclude that you are a total ignoramus.

What an arrogant post. Ever heard of people being allowed to have an opinion other than your own? I love TW, too, but I try not to let another's opinion get to me.

Yea his post was a bit rude despite the 'no offence' disclaimer. If we were talking about tv on the other hand, i might cheer somone bagging a lame list.... Only because i'm so tired of reading my tv guide at night and wanting to vomit because of the crap everyone want's to watch these days. If somone launches another reality tv series i'm going to put my tv on a catapault and launch it at their studio!!!!

Here are the games that were so good that nothing else seemed important but playing them:
GC 1 & 2
MOO 1 & 2
Speedball 2
Star Control 1 & 2
Star Fleet I: The War Begins
Overlord
Reach for the Stars (1983)
NHL Eastside Hockey Manager (entire series)
Powermonger
Populous 1 & 2

Most disappointing:
MOO3

Speedball 2

Do you mean that original Amiga computer game?

That was indeed a brilliant game! Super Nashwan will kick your ass,, hehehe i havn't played that game for years, especially with the long list of failed Amiga emulators i tried throughout the years.... It amazes me that people who are smart enough to create an emulator cannot seem to manage a few coherent instructions on how to make it work!

I simply must add to the best

Gal Civ (all of them)

Dungeon Keeper Two (I love being evil)

Stronghold series

Red Baron

and Scorched Earth 3d ( a good freeware game)

The best ones, I've passed hours on, and still do :
- Dominions 2&3 - ahh this game is uncomparable to anything !
- Combat Mission series !
- Civ 1,2 and 4 (3 was so-so)- also mention to AC, which was brilliant
- Baldur's Gate series; Calling this "hack& slash" means you didn't understand the concept
- UFO 1

As for the worst, no need to lose time on it...

And how could I forget the games that got me started
in all this...(Resistance MUST be futile!)

STAR FLIGHT I & II!

Speaking of worst games - have you seen "Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing"?

Just _any_ game seems great compared to this one

I can't limit my favorites to just 7, unfortunately.

StarCraft (they just announced the sequel last night, which makes me very happy)
XCOM: UFO Defense
Knights of the Old Republic
World of Warcraft (say what you want about it, but crappy games don't get billions of subscribers)
Allegiance
Half-Life 1 and 2
TIE Fighter
Sam & Max Hit the Road
Deus Ex
System Shock 2

As for worst... I can't say I've really played many games that truly sucked, since I tend to read reviews before buying. The only real disappointments have been every Star Wars strategy game since Rebellion. Come to think of it, Rebellion wasn't that great either.

Another game for honorable mention: SimEarth. Watching and participating in Earth’s evolution was a kick, and the terraforming Mars scenario was a hoot. Sadly, it simply won’t work on post-XT PCs, and no emulations I’ve tried has worked. **sigh**

I'm not sure why I can't scroll through pages 2 etc of the forum threads, but be this as it may, I would like to add a couple of games which I feel are worth mentioning, in no particular sequence:

- "Stars!". In my opinion, still one of the best turn-based 4X space games, despite (or because of?) its lack of graphics.

- "Mordor - The Depths Of Dejenol". An RPG veteran, the best of the Rogue-like category, in my opinion (has some, but not too much graphics)

- "Morrowind" has been mentioned because of its atmosphere, I would like to add that there are a few fan-made (and free) total conversions available, which are bigger, and more interesting, too, than many other full-price games, namely "Sword Of The Perithia", "Sea Of Destiny", "Arktwend", "Myar Aranath", the last 2 ones being in German.

- "Might & Magic 6 - The Mandate Of Heaven". Parts 1 - 5 are interesting (and extremely challenging) RPGs, too, but part 6 looks nicer and is easier accessible for average gamers.

- "Undying". Still gives me creeps. Great atmosphere, great story, great graphics, great action! One of my all-time favourites.

- "Trackmania". The most interesting and original racing game (both old and new version) since Mario Cart on the SNES (you don't have to agree! ).

- "Sword Of The Stars". I'm sure I get a few nasty comments for mentioning this game in this context, but for me SOTS is an interesting and challenging approach to inject some new blood into the 4X genre. It contains a lot of good ideas - I'm aware that not all of them have been implemented in the best possible fashion.

That's seven games already, so I won't mention others like Ascendancy, Master Of Orion 1 (yes, my favourite is part 1, not part 2!), Heroes Of Might & Magic (I'm still undecided between parts 2 and 3), Outcast, Magic The Gathering (the old Microprose game), ...

Edit: I have to mention one other game - the first "immersive" RPG which let me view the events through my alter ego's eyes, and the game which turned RPGs from intellectual challenges (like the older Might & Magic titles) to "goose-bumpy" events: it's
- "Ultima Underworld 1 - The Stygian Abyss". Although the graphics look outdated now, from a role-playing and atmospheric viewpoint it can still compete with most (if not all) of today's RPGs.

hmmmmm...

Best

Planescape Torment - first played it in 2005, it was dated, but the story and atmosphere was amazing. Especially the story - Amazing.

Moo2 - I personally think Galciv2 is its equal. Both are great, but have different strengths and waeknesses that make them remarkable games.

Total war - Novel concept, but Creative assembly seems to be sitting on their laruels - Crappy AI, less and less realism, buggy code. It wouldn't be here except for a strong community that have made some amazing mods (like total realism).

Morrowind - Buggy - but a strong, huge game with a lot of work from teh community.

Xwing + Tie Fighter - (two different games) and prolly my favorite fps/sim games. Xwing was near impossible (amazing challange), and Tie had a great story.

Worst:

hmmmm - hard to think of them. Battlescruiser? - yeah there's one.
The elite sequels were pretty bad. Although I did like x2 and x3, but they just felt dry and unimmersive. Too much of a numbers game and not enough game.

Ps I've seen someone whose little avatar/picture/whatever is Morte.
Don't trust the Skull.
