7 Best & 7 Worst PC Games

7 Best & 7 Worst PC Games

As I win several games on the tough level (in this case GC2), I begin to get bored (no reflection on the excellent GC2). As with all fine games, Chess, Poker, Talonsoft series, after a while I look forward to the next generation of new PC Games.

While waiting, I like to discuss how we gamers like our PC games. Sometimes I learn of a game I have not heard about & will enjoy playing.

I wonder what our finest & worst game lists include.

I begin. I recognize that my choices will not necessarily be your choices.

The Best

1. Talonsoft military series (West Front Elite) etc. All turnbased. Verbs are not needed here. Needed more programming & army groupings were often too large & ai/programming was lacking. The artwork was brilliant.

2. Age of Empires 1 & 2. RTS that was balanced & worked. The later Age games were unbalanced & therefore unplayable by me. Additionally, RTS is not my faorite genre.

3. Chessmaster series.

4. Myst # 1 & Syberia 1 & 2. Too many puzzles had nothing to do with the plot. Artwork was brilliant.

5. The latest Hoyle Casino. Finaly got the rules in Texas Holdum right.

6. Hearts of Might & Magic 4. It worked

7. Tropico. Poor Fidel & Che. Nice artwork, music. After you developed 1 island, the game got repetitious.

The Worst

1. Paradox games. All. They have yet to produce a game. What they release is always bug ridden. Shortcuts, only hire one blind programmer at $1.50 an hour. Don't like the conquer the world stuff. Latest Europa 3 has no historical events;-Need I say more?

2. Totalwar. Shogun was decent; went downhill from there. Don't like the conquer the world stuff. I realize that others have higher opinion of Totalwar. The only opinion that counts on this planet - is yours.

3. Balders Gate. Beautiful artwork, but my heroes & heroines kept dying. Never made it to town of Balders Gate. It was the best of the hack & Slashes.

4. MOO3

5. Lords of the Realm 3. #2 had unbalanced economy that ruined a promising game. #3 had some brilliant concempt changes, but the $budget$ ran out & LOTR3 was released unfinished.

6. Civilwar Generals 1 & 2. They couldn't master the simple art of having units SHOOT. They only pushed, or charged. Had potential.

7. The whole genre of shooters.

These are only partial lists. The wife hates all my games. She thinks life is about hard work, responsibility, courage, & properly raising our kids. I love her, but she's not perfect. I'm interested in your favorites/worsts. Your choices will reveal much about your personality.

NWN is primarily a multiplayer game, I know this because I've played through both the original and the Hordes of the Underdark campaigns with friends online.

oh ok. i will have to look it up

But not all multiplayer games would be of any use to me and my wife at home. I am noticing more and more games with exclusive online servers which kills the at home LAN option. I nearly bought one the other day, i forget the name but i was sadly dissapointed - the store attendant said i would have to buy the game twice to play online with my wife 'bingo' there's my answer why LAN is out.

Now I definitely can't vouch for the LAN option, and it's become an unfortunate trend of late to do away with the whole "several people can play with one disc" option as well. If memory serves, the NWN disc doesn't have to be in the drive, which might solve the problem. I don't know how it'd respond to two people with the same CD key trying to play with one another, though, and don't really know how you'd find out without trying it.

Ah that must be the problem then. Oh well, we all just have to bite the bullet and stop supporting these restrictions by simply not bying these games.

I can certainly understand that, and would tend to agree that voting with your wallet is always the best way to make a statement. I haven't played anything LAN-wise since college, though, so it's not even something I notice anymore.

As regards NWN, I really have no idea about the LAN thing. It might be worth doing a bit of digging around on the web to see if you can find a definite answer on that.

A good example of that problem is neverwinter nights. I wanted to play that but no, no multiplayer mission

There are lots of persistent worlds out there that are multiplayer, i.e. worlds that you can log on to and play on that are maintained by fans. Whether it's action, roleplaying or whatever you're into there's 100s of them out there and most of them are pretty massive with quests and 100s of hours of gameplay. That's actually the majority of where my gaming hours in Neverwinter were spent.

Having said that, a lot of them are fairly draconian in the way that they're run, it took me a while before I found one where the GMs weren't a bunch of tools on a power trip.

I'm looking for games i can play with my wife... we enjoyed playing lionheart and dungeonsiege2

You could try the original Dungeon Siege, the wife and I finished both the original and expansion campaigns; but we never could get through DS2, didn't have the time and lost interest. I just recently bought a game called Silverfall. I haven't had a whole lot of time to play around with it yet, but I do believe it has the ability to do the campaign in multiplayer. That game's US site seems to be full of nothing but complaints though, so you might wanna do some research rather than just take my word for it.

I was thinking that, and it has the new expansion as well. Silverfail i wanted to buy some time ago but there was some problem i noticed when reading the box in store that put me off, i forget what that was? It probably failed to clarify the multiplayer options which is a typical reason that stops me buying allot of games.

One thing i have learnt in life when it comes to advertising of games or any other product.... if it is not clearly specified, then chances are it will not be.

Which is why I usually check out forums and demos.

A warning about Silverfall. As I said, I have not played it long enough to find if the complaining at their forum is warranted, but I have played it enough to know you need a halfway decent machine. My Althon X2 4400 w/ 2GB RAM, and a Geforce 7600 GT KO seems to get slightly sluggish at times...although it seems to run at a tolerable level on my wife's Athlon 3800 w/ 1GB RAM and a Geforce 6600LE.

I have a x86 15 family model 12 stepping 0 authenticAMD 2009 mhz system with 1024mb ram and a gigabyte radeon 9600 pro 256mb ram video card.
My wifes system is a p4 1.7 mhz with same ram and graphics as above.

I wanted to buy a new graphics card recently but that idea got shot down in flames since i don't have 16x compatable motherboard! Then i looked at buying a new duel core system but with my finances i would have to compramise so much there's no point. I only have AUD $500.00 or USD $416.46

Yeah, with those stats, I definitely would not bother with Silverfall without trying the demo on all machines involved first. (I don't think there is a multiplayer demo.)
And even then I probably wouldn't bother with even using the bandwidth to download it.
The original Dungeon Siege should run fine though, I originally played it on one of the first 1Ghz Athlons.

I get dungeonsiege 2 running good on my machine with lag only in big skirmishes, my wifes machine runs it a little less good though, and that is bad because i wan't her to really enjoy the game.

My list of just couldn't quit playing
1..Sid Maier's Pirates
2..Sim City
3..Bard' Tale
4..Ultima 4
5..Doom
6..Master of Magic
7..Half Life
8..Lord's of the Realm 2
9..Civilzation2/4
10..Alpha Centauri
11..GalCiv2
12..Warlords 1/2
It's funny. Looking at that list I still play most of those games from time to time. The ones I don't I'm sure I would if I could find a copy of them.

The 'Oh my god I spent money on this crap' List
1..Space Empires 5 (oh how I wish they could make this game work.)
2..Command & Conquer 2 (More of the same, over and over again.)
3..Lords of Magic (not even close to the game it was supposedly based upon.)
4..I'm sure there are more but bad memories are best left to drift away.

i just discovered a disaster of a game... Command and conquor generals.

Why?

Cannot play it in multiplayer lan mode with my wife,, it says "serial code already in use".

Ok morons who made command and conquor generals, how come i can run dungeonsiege 2 in lan mode with only one serial code? Because they are not stingy asseholes like you are!

yea i love Totala and Alpha centauri, never played the rest except Starcraft.

I couldn't play starcraft at all since the 'easy' level is broken or somthing? Anyway i kept getting dead before having a chance to learn the game, threw it in the crap pile, too bad.

2) Gangsters-Organized Crime (truly awful)
3) Grand Theft Auto III
4) Europa Universalis I
5) Carmageddon
6) Command and Conquer (the first one)
7) Joint Operations-Typhoon Rising

Wow, no offence or anything, but your list is one of the worst best and worst games lists I've ever seen. If i was stuck on a desert island with only those 7 best games to play, I'd be bored out of my mind. You put the total war series on your worst list. There are hundreds of crap games on PC and you choose to put a series that revolutionised the strategy genre.
I therefore conclude that you are a total ignoramus.

The 7 Worst:(but believe me, there were more "turkeys" than I care to remember)

1) Age of Empires I

What?? I have age of empires 1, 2, and 3, and you know which one i play most often? Age of empires 1! Although my wife hates those wizards hehehe. What makes age of empires 1 better i think is that it has better random map options and also you get to enjoy the units you build.... in AOG 2 and 3 the individual units are far less significant, you just produce and kill, produce and kill till somone produces and kills more efficiently and eventually wins over the corpses of a million dead units, a little monotonous.
All you gotta do in AOE2 is make lots of Paladins.

Command and Conquer I, and Age of Empires I were my first foray into the early RTS genre of games. I realized very early on that RTS games simply did not suit my playing style. I much prefer TBS types instead...it's just what I'm more comfortable with.

I am definately more comfortable with TBS games too, and i did nearly give up on AOG1 the same as you. Seemed to me that the AI can stuff around with multiple units simultaneously and attack you in 3 different locations all at once while you can only do one thing at a time! Then of course the AOG1 AI likes to have some of its units ignore your defences, run past and then start killing your peasants - this is what nearly made me give up on AOG1 in particular. But i perservered and learnt to always build at least 5 cavalry for any 'run past' AI units.
