Galaxy sizes / scaling ??

While reading some ofthe posts to the "what do you want next" post by Frogboy, i noticed something that raised a question to me, being very new to this game. I have so far only played on a small map, i notice that doing this enabled me to have almost complete access the the whole map with only a small amout of range boosters. Also, it means that colonization was fast and furious, with eveyone being close and the number of planets limited (Mars was even taken by an AI like right away).

So the qiuestion i have is that on larger sized maps, do the ranges of ships and speeds and all that get scaled? That is does a ship opn a large map have a greater range that the same ship on a small map? What raised this question was one post on that topic that this should be changed.

And if this IS that case i would agree, playing on a larger map should be a different experience, not just MORE of an experience, more shiops, more planets, more money... . Limiting the ships ranges would mean having to stay close to home longer and that would make playing on each the sized map a different game with different strategies. it migght take the construction of a star base or two to meet your neighbor. For those who like to build their empire in relative peace in a methodical manor, the larger te better. For those who want immediate conflict, small is the way to go.

I dunno, just an idea.

You start off with exactly the same whatever the map size.

And you have to research engines and life support to increase speed and range.

Your assumption is correct, Map size does radically change the game. The larger maps do give you more time to grow especially with few opponents, fast engines are needed to have any meaningful interactions

To answer the OP's question, yes range is scaled somewhat slightly based on map size.
This is the reason your ships never have the same range it displays in the ship designer when you design them. Because as soon as you build one, its range is scaled based on map size.

For instance, at the start of the game, a naked ship (no life supports) has a base range of 0.4 sectors on a Large map.

That same ship has 0.2 base on a Tiny.
And something like 0.9 on a Gigantic.

The range added by life support modules is scaled as well. I know Basic Support adds 0.8 sectors on a Large, I can't recall the other numbers off the top of my head but I know it scales... I looked into modding this out, frankly I hate it.

For two reasons mainly. 1) It makes the readout in the ship design always give incorrect data, and 2) if I play a larger map, it's because I want a larger experience Don't 'scale' me up.

Ship movement isn't scaled though, to answer your second question.
