Will the new DA update be out by the end of the week?

Or at least a Hotfix?

As the title asks, will we have it this week or are we doomed to another weekend of frustration?

Yes I'm bumping. I want this on the front page, nice and easy to see......

Yeah I'm hoping the new update comes soon as well... I hope they can improve performance on lower end systems for Dark Avatar. And of course improve the tech trading and such as well.

I'd just like the off type defense bug fixed... I'm not booting up a game again until it is, because it's currently quite crippling to the game dynamics when it comes into effect.

I think you can expect the next release to be strictly bug fixes. Any performance improvements will no doubt have to wait until 1.6X is released, which could be a month or so from now.

Should be tomorrow. It'll remain 1.5X.

What is the off-type defense bug?

What is the off-type defense bug?

Some people are reporting that ships will get defence results even from modules that aren't supposed to give them. Like a ship that has a defence module against beam weapons, but they still provide protection against missile weapons even though they aren't supposed to.

So they put on a Shield module and then they get +2 against beam and +1 against missile? Or is it just that they are providing MORE than they should off type (square root of it I think)? Personally I haven't had too much of an issue with this, but I can see how it would be a devilish bug on higher levels and with huge fleet battles occurring. I feel bad for anyone that has dealt with that bug.

They shouldn't be providing any protection against weapons they're not designed for. I'm not exactly sure how the bug is working, I'm just going by things I've been reading about.

They shouldn't? Not played much since the DA beta, so maybe I missed this change, but previously they still gave their square root in defence to off types.

...and there was much rejoicing and repeating of the love of Stardock!

Like I said, I don't really know how they work, but it stands to reason that a Deflector shouldn't give any bonus to a Missile attack. They were designed with Beam weapons in mind after all.

I think they do provide the square root, but for some reason the off-defences don't "drain" properly (in each round, defences get weaker each time they save you from damage). This means they take off too much damage from weapons over the course of the battle. I'm no expert either, but there is a big thread about it here somewhere.

The basic problem with them is thus:

With fairly high off type defense bonuses, where the square root value is equal or higher than the attack value of each INDIVIDUAL WEAPON, this problem is fairly clear. Basically, the drain to the defense after each shot is applied to the NORMAL value, not the square root... the result is that the square rooted value will only degrade by tiny amounts in the course of a round of battle. Each weapon is fired individually, which is the root of the problem, as weapons don't typically have high individual attack values until late in the tech tree.

To put it in numbers: if you were to attack a ship with 25 point defense using 10 plasma cannons (0-2 attack each), you would EXPECT that the 20 beam attack you have would allow you to overpower the off-type defenses with ease. This isn't the case. The first cannon would roll against a defense of 5. However, the defenses would not degrade properly... if the point defense had absorbed 2 damage, it would now have a base value of 23... meaning the square root is now 4, still a potent defense against a weapon that only does 0-2 damage! Even if EVERY plasma was absorbed by the defenses at full damage, it would take 5 hits before the base damage would drop below 16, making the square root defense 3... which is ITSELF a good defense against 2 beam attack.

Because of this, a defense that should have been like putting tissue paper in front of a bullet ends up taking little, if any, damage.

Sweet. Is there a changelog up yet? I haven't seen any in the journals.
Are you sure? I just opened SDC and it didn't show an updated version.

It is out, SDC has it up.

Go forth and conquer....

cheers! just downloaded and installed.

What does this fix exactly? The CTD and FOW issues? The defense-type bug too?
