Hoping for new patch soon

I was wondering about the ETA of the new patch that will fix the FOW problem. I'm not complaining I just want to play again. I miss the game.

The devs are working to get it ready and posted as soon as they can, but unfortunately I can't offer a specific deadline.

It doesn't look promising for today, time is running out. Unless someone decides to put in some overtime. Unpaid no doubt. What's the usual work hours over at Stardock anyway Kryo?

I think that this hurry is a bit exaggerated. I'm playing at DA, size medium, and it's playable. It's false that the game is not playable.. is playable if you use a not so big map.

The latest patach had such a major error. I like the game, but come on, I'd like it even more if I could save and continue later when I'm ready to quiet for the day.

Well maybe some of us aren't content to play smaller maps. I'm certainly not. I even find Gigantic too small, at least with 9 races. I'd like to see a couple more sectors all around with that many races.

There are other issues besides the fog of war. Memory write errors and CTD's disrupt any game regardless of galaxy size... so no, there's no exaggerations going on and yes, the game is pretty much useless if you lose your data, wouldn't you think so?

I must be lucky, I haven't had an issue with the CTD thing, and I haven't played larger than medium, so the FOW doesn't bug me either, no pun intended.

What is this bug you guys are talking about? I have ver 1.5 of gold edition, playing either DL or DA, I don't run into fog of war or saving issues, and I always play the biggest map available, Gigantic I think it's called...

So whats this problem?

-EDIT- I forgot to mention, I agree with one of posters above, there should be map bigger than Gigantic, I think it's not enough with 9 races playing!! Please give us even bigger map next update perhaps!?

I am currently playing a game with a gigantic map and have put many hours into it. I want the patch so I can continue this game which I have put so much effort into and with the FOW my far right side of the universe is obscured. Yes, I could probably play with a smaller universe in a new game but I was having too much fun in my old game until I downloaded the latest patches. Anyway I'll just wait and pray the new patch fixes it.

I don't understand why ppl just don't copy and paste, their saved games into a diff folder, then uninstall game, then install it again, then u have a fresh copy without the bugged update, then just copy and pase ur saved games, and play. Just don't update again till it's fixed.

Well if you have the game via download only then what? To uninstall and then go to SDC to reinstall is going to re-introduce the same issues since the version over at SDC already has the latest update, no? I mean if I am wrong then by all means correct me on this.

The problem with larger maps is that they use more memory. Plus, even if you could in theory expand both axes by a factor of ten, the wait time at the end of the turn would increase at a phenomenal rate as the AI is given more time to path-find.

The only reason the likes of MOO2 could fit so many stars systems into a galaxy at the time it was released was because ships didn't move 'off-road' and therefore there was much less data to record about ships and their whereabouts.

Ok, but the game will be back operative early, in the meantime (i suppose 1 or 2 days), try to play a medium map with less civs, and be patience.

Ok, if you've lots of ctd, i understand you.. but if you have only to limitate the game to smaller map size for few days, i think you can wait without flame stardock Writing sofware brings bugs, no one can code without any error. So i prefer that Stardock takes 1 or 2 days more and make a good patch instead of an hurry patch with some others bugs.

Is it asking too much for a fix to the off-type defense bug in the next patch?

It's only a problem if you've installed the 1.5X.068 patch. When playing on Gigantic, one of the sides of the map won't get it's unexplored terrain covering cleared after you've sent a ship into it. It will remain that solid grey colour. You can see the planets/ships etc. but the background map remains grey. Apparently, though I've never even gotten that far, if you save a game like that, when you reload it all that territory needs to be rediscovered again.

Well some of us have systems that can handle a little more, Gigantic on my computer barely raises a sweat, so to speak. And who's talking about factors of 10? Just a couple more sectors all around would be nice. I'm sure my computer could handle even 4 more around, which would be ideal with 9 races. It would give everyone lots of room to develop good sized empires. As it stands, there's always a race or two that gets crowded out early in the game, and never amounts to very much.

This has really turned out to be one hell of a patch hasn't it? Between the fog of war, the CTDs and the off-type defence bug, the game is actually worse off than it was before. I've reinstalled my game and I won't be getting the patch again until the fixed version comes out. And I'm not going to be in hurry on that one until I make sure everything actually is fixed.

In a galaxy with 9 AI civs, it's inevitable that one or two of them will be crowded out and conquered early on. When you think about it, isn't it far better to match your wits against seven AI opponents who have had the luck or programming to make a good start in the galaxy?

As far as game dimensions go, remember that although you wouldn't see a hundred-fold increase in memory usage with a tenfold increase in each axis, there would be room for the same number of objects less densely populated, or a hundred times as many objects as presently occupy a gigantic galaxy. It's a nice round figure.

Like I said, the real problem with larger galaxies is not memory but the AI not having the ability to navigate such vastness and actually be able to accomplish anything. Humans have the advantage in being able to purposely decide on a course of action with a mere glance at the map.

It seems to me that if a game like Civilization can have the AI deal effectively with much larger maps, the AI in GalCiv should be able to handle a slighter larger map as well. All I'd really like to see is something that's 22 X 22 instead of the current 18 X 18. That's not really a huge increase.

The best option would be for Stardock to open up the map sizes and let us set our own limits. So many aspects of this game have been hardcoded that to me don't really make any sense. Our options for modding the game are really quite limited.

Well, when using SDC to get the update, one should always have enabled the option "auto-archive on udpate".  This will create an archive of the game before updating it. That way, you will be able to restore the archive with SDC and play an older version
