AI: parties and abilities

New to DA. Just a quick question: do AI's use their ability points and do they have poltical parties as well? (If so, do they win/lose elections?)

The AI does indeed spend leftover ability points, and picks its own party. I'm not absolutely certain if the AI has elections, but I would expect it does (it would be unfair if it didn't).

I almost never see the AI planets' approval drop below 50%, so even if they don't, the end result is the same.

Yes they do, and even lose occasionally - you get a popup saying that

Yup, I see that message now and then too.

Okay, but how do they choose their party? Is it chosen at game start? Is it chosen at random or does the AI "personality" pick the party based on its strategy?

If you go to the debug.err file you'll see any number of events (tech trading, random event) including AI elections. I don't recall if it tells you the result.

i've seen AIs lose elections on occasion; usually not til i gift them the advanced government techs, though, since they rarely make this a research priority. i'm not sure they pick their own political parties or if they just go with the defaults assigned to them; i usually pick their party and ability points myself, because i notice they tend to do better.
