Better weapons without upgrading to different ship?

I noticed last night that one of my opponent's ships' kept increasing in attack power, without buying new ships. It was the Yor I believe, and his escorts continually increased in power as they sat along side my border. I tried to find a way to do this myself but it seemed the only way I could do it was to upgrade the ship design to something with better weapons, but since you can’t upgrade a core ship design I was left building a new ship and having to pay a ton of money to change it into a new ship to match his firepower.

I’m not sure what I’m missing here, as I’m pretty new to the game. (Luckily I was a diplomat anyhow and won by alliance and It didn’t come down to fighting him, but I would have been destroyed if so.)

Did they have military resources they were improving?

It could also be a military combat star base. There are some modules/upgrades that increase the attack/defense ratings of the ships inside its area.

to upgrade the core ships just add a number to the name

I would say this is the case, since the AI will typically build them near their military build up.

Did you get some event notice that the Yor discovered a precursor artifact and were becoming more powerful by the day? It's not a mega event, it happens sometimes. In my games it's usually the Arceans. Othwerise, probably one of the above ideas.

Who say you can't upgrade a core ship design? You'll just have to give a different name, something like Mk1, Mk2 etc. You don't have to use the core ships as is, you can make any changes you want to them as long as you don't try to give them the exact same name. Yes it will cost you some money, but that's what the Yor had to do as well.

Thanks Guys. I guess it was military resource, they controlled most of the map by this point and Its pretty likely the had one or two, though I won't rule out the starbase possibility - I didn't pay much attention to that.

And I understand I can upgrade ships to a different version, but this seems incredibly expensive, and I'm always short on cash. Also, is there a way to upgrade many ships at once?

there is an option to upgrade all ships of the same type or if you upgrade a ship and keep the same name it will attempt to upgrade them all - but usually you must select 'cancel' since you dont want to be in dept by 50b credits!!

In DL i only upgrade ships that get damaged, since upgrading them also repairs them. Also if i have an old ship in a fleet with a powerful ship - since the enemy will always fire on the most powerful ship first, so the weak old ships never gets touched. It will continue gaining experience until one day when i can afford to upgrade it.

Does the attack/defense adjustment from military starbases affect planets as well?
