New alliances and their effect?

I haven't been able to find out what effect having a research or financial alliance with another faction does for me or them. Can someone help me out? Thanks.

Research and economic treaties give the recipient a bonus equal to 10% of the giver's research or economic output. They are non-revokable except in the case of the recipient's death, or war between giver and reipient.

The giver does not lose that 10%; it is a "free" bonus for the recipient.

There are other things involved, too. If you attack someone you have a special treaty with (either in your favour or against) all races will start to regard you with suspicion. Additionally, while these treaties don't MANDATE military assistance, the AIs will defend people they have treaties with. This can make things ugly, fast...
