Minor Races

The minor races need updating. All they do is just sit around and wait to be destroyed and seeing as though they can not muster a strong military, most of them are destroyed within the first few dozen turns. If DA and DL were missing anything, it was that the minor races were not up to scratch. Something must be done.

Make the minor races capable of becoming a "major race." Set a number of planets, for example, 3, so that when their empire reaches that number of planets under their control, a message will pop up saying;
"-insert minor race name here- has aquired enough power to become a major race. Etc..."
Once a Minor Race has become a Major Race, they are entetred into the United Planets, leading to a wider spectrum of the Galaxy's needs and wants!

Let Minor Races be able to develop fleets and not just starbases! I'm sick of giving them my battleships just so they can stay alive. They need to act like major races, occasionally sending out a few troop transports to take over other planets and be upgraded to a major race.

This would make for a more varied and interesting game.

I have noticed that the Minor races really are... minor in this game. Basically when one of them shows up later in the game, the whole point seems to be merely as fodder for the nearest troppship. They don't even start with a single defender anymore - not like the old games where they could be quite tough.

Just something as simple as getting them to build a proper defence fleet (they usually have the productive capacity) rather than pointless starbases would make them a bit more interesting. I would also like to see a peaceful option to incorporate them into your empire - maybe when you had excellent relations with them, instead of an alliance they could be offered membership of your empire.
A similar system was used, very effectively I might add, in Birth of the Federation.

I wonder how much better they would perform if they were simply forbidden from building construction modules on their ships. It is quite reasonable I think, as it would reflect the fact that they are localised minor powers and not galaxy wide. I agree with col80's point about getting them to join you like in BotF, that would be cool. I could imagine after researching xeno ethics or something, with good, neutral and evil giving the minors different names when they join- something like
Good - permanent alliance status
neutral - favoured partner status
evil - vassal status

In early versions of DL, the REALLY early versions, minors used to be more useful. I had the snathi one time and they were a quite powerful trading civilization. They even had some military muscle to throw in.

I've been wanting some ways to remove some of the hard caps on the minors since day one.
