Autopilot bug

Changes direction without reason

I had such bug couple of times - autopiloted ship for no reason changes the direction and goes to completely different direction as ordered.
I tried to find out what causes this, but i wasn't succesful, so i'm unable to avoid this

What exactly do you mean? Sometimes the focus will change from one ship to another without my realizing it and I'll click somewhere, thinking I'm directing ship A but in fact I'm changing the destination for ship B without intending to.

There have been issues with ships losing their autopilot destination and merely sitting in one location. This issue has existed to a greater or lessor degree in a number of different revisions of the game. Not sure the state of this under v1.5 or DA.

But it sounds like what you're talking about is something that's not really a bug. I'm just guessing, but what can happen is that when you click on a autopilot destination it may turn out that the "real" destination is set to some other ship/fleet. When that ship/fleet moves then ships that may have that ship/fleet as a destination will follow the original ship/fleet.

This most often happens when you set a ships autopilot destination to a rally point and there are ships and/or fleets already at that rally point. Clicking on the rally point sometimes sets the autoplilot destination to be the rally point but just as likely will make a ship/fleet that's sitting at the rally point the destination. If that ship/fleet moves the first ship follows. You can tell by looking at the details of an errant ship. If it says the destination is fleet 1234 instead of rally point 1234 or xy location (123,456) then that's what's going on.

I've also done what Gre_Magus describes. When you select a ship it takes a moment before the screen centers on that ship. If you're trying to click on a destination while the screen is moving, the autopilot destination is set god knows where the the ship takes off in the wrong direction, but it doesn't sound like this is what you're talking about.

I've repeatedly encountered this autopilot bug. For example, I'll select my survey ship, right click directly on a meteor cluster for it to explore, and the green autopilot route lights up, supposedly confirming the destination. Several turns later I'll check back and the ship is just sitting there, not moving. Even if the target is so close it could make it there in one turn.

the only weird thing i have noticed with auto piolate is on very rare occasions a ship will somehow defy its range limitation and travel to the oposite side of the map!

sometimes when that happens i will keep getting a message saying that the ship cannot travel that far etc etc. However since that message does not zoom me to the offending ship, i dunno what it's talking about and just dissregard it.

Twice now during Campaign Missions, I've loaded a quick save game and had every single one of my ships thats not orbiting a planet, all fly to the destination of my mining ship thats set on auto mining.

Haven't been able to reliably duplicate the bug so far. But somehow the mining ship's autopilot destination seems to get set for every ship thats not orbiting a planet. Its rather frustrating trying to figure out what the proper destination is for 40 different ships. Not to mention noticing 10 turns later that you missed 3-4 ships and they all arrived on the asteroid and went down to 1 move. lol

Lol, now this bug totally destroyed my game at first turn. I even had no chance to give any commands, i just set the research, taxes and building, saved the game and when i loaded it again - my colony ship has for no reason switched to autopilot and gone on his own to some location, that seems to be random

There is a rare autopilot bug like this. I've had them on several occasions decide to travel to a random place on the map. I've seen this most frequently after a game load. There is an even rarer one that I refer to as the "Drunk Autopilot". I've actually only seen this one twice...The Autopilot vessel moves in one direction, suddenly changes direction, and moves that way instead, all within one turns movement. The first time the ship actually ended up behind where it started after making a bizarre circle.

Well, this bug pretty much ruins all fun for me, because i`m a perfectionist type of player, therefore i use save/load very often. But if loading game f*cks up the autopilot then...

If you turn on Show Autopilot lines in the mini-map, you can often spot them and just correct them manually...

When having many fleets and individual ships this doesn't really help...

OP:

Did it go the wrong way when you clicked, or did it go the right direction, and then start going a different direction the next turn? Because I've had the latter happen when I try to give moment orders to a ship that's on auto-survey or auto-explore: they'll follow their orders right away, and then the next turn the auto-survey/explore will kick in and give it a new waypoint.

This one.
