Question about campaign goal in mission 2

I am currently on mission 3 of the campaign, but admit to being perplexed as to the win goal in mission 2. In 1, I blew everyone off the map, but then was told that wasn't cool because there were no people left to enslave.

So in mission 2, where it said to not blow the Terrans off the map, I tried a bit harder to use influence to turn them. No go. I fought and took a planet or two, but they still wouldn't surrender to me. So I finally said heck with it and blew them off the map, which appeared to be just the thing to do (since the text at mission end said I was back in the government's good graces).

So my question is this: why did I win the mission even though, in my opinion, destroying the Terrans was not what I was supposed to do? Is the text for the objectives simply misleading?

Thanks,

In mission 2, you have to conquer the Terrans. Apparently, you killed the Thalans as well if you destroyed all enemies. Destroying just the Terran rebels will bring the mission to a close.

You are not supposed to attack the Thalan outpost world. I use them as a source of revenue.

Sorry if my wording wasn't clear. I didn't conquer the Thalans - just the Terrans.

But it sounded like from the mission goal that I wasn't supposed to completely conquer the Terrans, which I did. Maybe I'm just misunderstanding the wording of the mission.

The wording doesn't refer to your actions. It says that the Korath, not you, killed all the enemies after the first mission. The Drengin enslave conquered people, not exterminate them as the Korath have been; this is a plot point for later.

You can check the Victory tab under the Civilization Manager and it will tell you what you have to do.

The eradication thing is just storyline, that's all.

Ah, so I misunderstood what it said when I finished mission 1. I thought it was the Drengin who killed everyone - my mistake.

But I need to look at the mission goals for mission 2 again. I could've sworn it said something about how to make sure the Terrans don't get completely destroyed, and it's unclear to me exactly what they mean by that (to me it implied that it wanted me to win some way other than militarily, but I won via militarily conquering the Terrans).
