PIRATES!!!!

I think they are way to strong

So I am playing a game on challenging on a medium map and the pirate super event comes up. I am by far the weakest military wise this game but I have a few tough ships. Anyways the pirates show up and kill every ship I have in a single turn, thier ships are ten times the strength of anything I have or had seen that game. I am feeling pretty bad about myself at this point when I notice the military graph and in a matter of 10 turns or so every single civilization in the game has gone down to 0 military. Pirates should not be able to kill every single ship in play.

Does anyone know whether the Pirates mega-event goes away on its own after a while? At the stage they came into my game, they were many, many times more powerful than all the Civs combined. My fleet is faster, so I can keep away from them, but building up to their level will take several real-time days - especially with no space stations, miners or Trade ships.

In theory I could eventually overcome this. But in practice, that kind of endless tedium isn't a fun way to spend several dozen hours. This game is ruined and I don't see any point in starting over if another insane "event" like this one could happen at any time.

Frankly, this looks like a pretty stupid thing to put in a game.

I agree, it is rather stupid when they are too difficult to beat, they are actually stronger than the normal pirates that sometimes appear, at least I think they are.

I can see it now.

PICARD: WTF? THE BORG?

RYKER: YES, THIS IS STUPID. WE CANT BEAT THEM!

PICARD: OMG, I AM COMPLAINING. ITS UNBALANCED THAT THERE IS SOMETHING IN GALAXY I CANNOT DEFEAT.

RYKER: I AGREE. THIS EPISODE IS HOSED.

Yes, I agree. Do they even behave like pirates? That is, staying away from ships under the control of major powers and going for starbases, freighters, miners, and constructors?

Want my opinion? Replace the pirates with the Dread Lords. That is, change the name 'pirates' to 'Dread Lords', and make the pirate ships look like Dread Lord ships. Then, give them the planet Amalda, and let them keep their fleet. That would really bring 'woe to all' like it says.

Then, they should make the pirates like the Jagged Knife. You can negiotiate with them. They can gain BC from starbases, asteroids, trade routes, freighters, constructors, space miners, and other cargo-hull ships. But they should be coded to stay away from direct confrontation.

And they can use the BC to buy improvements or ships at their planet (s).

That's part of the problem: If they'd done the exact same thing and called them the "Dread Borg", then you could at least imagine there was SUPPOSED to be something like a point to it, no matter how much it screwed up the game.

They're a hundred times more powerful than all the other races in the galaxy put together? And they materialize out of nowhere?

And they're "pirates?" Oh yeah, that makes a lot of sense. I mean, what the heck could anyone have that they'd want to steal anyway?

I tend to agree that the event should be kept but renamed. The Dread Lords are a good fit and need a psychotically huge buff, this would do it. A new pirate event, more "piratey," could be included too. Something like a rash of small, lightly armed, very fast ships that play on trading lanes and other vulnerable targets.

Women, rum, and Spanish Dubloons. What else?

good news! there is a dread lord one. Both Mega-Events appeared in my gigantic galaxy map. One half of the map is now owned by the dread lords, and the pirates are eating up all the ships that dare leave the orbit of their planets

Kopema you have the option to turn it off when you start your game.

Not really. If you are fast, all you have to do is rush a transport, warp it out to the location of Amalda, and conquer it. And if you don't, the AI will do it for you. Many people have complained that the Dread Lords start with no fleet. But they have every technology, so you have less then ten turns to wipe them out before they make ships. If the pirate fleet was converted into Dread Lord ships, they'd span with a warfleet and start bringing death and destruction to the galaxy.

Just like it was in the campaign. In the third mission of the Dread Lord campaign, some Drengin guy activates a temple, and summons the Precursor army back. But their army had about 100 Dread Lord starships.

I agree with your analogy, if the episode started off with Picard trying to teach Data that if you get the Torians real happy they breed like tribbles, then suddenly 100 borg ships appear out of nowhere destroy the enterprise in a hit then go on to kill the Federation, Klingons and Romulans and then the series ends with Q going "wtf just happened...?"... and the Borg wore eye patches and sang songs about rum and chests

Really all I think should be done is just give the pirates comparably strengthed ships

Turning Mega Events off if your not good at the game = Teh Win

Seriously, the pirate event is so easy to get around. Research better ships, or go for faster transports and let them take out your enemy's defenders while you take their planets. Easy.

That was great. The game is random and it is unrealistic to think you are the strongest

And thats why I like to play Battle of the Gods. Oooooh kay lets start pumping out Apollo Cruiser, ThunderChilde Battle ships and a couple of Genocide Class Dreadnaughts. Admittedly you got to have your industrial capacity Way up and not to be afraid of putting everything into military spending. But the sooner you get out from under the thumb of the pirates the faster you will recover from the other races.

I hate the spy Mega event. And I have learned sometimes it cheaper to destoy a colony than than keep pumping spys into it.

Duh

Whenever I see the word "pirate", I just tell my brain that I'm seeing the word "target", and the rest seems to follow...

an obvious idea!

especially for all of us who were once upon a time playing galciv1 and first heard the term "dread lords" which then inspired all kinds of daydreams of some super enemy to come into our game and finally test those magnificant excaliburs!!

Never could i have guessed what a 'flop' the dreadlords would turn out to be.
