I hope this is a bug.

AI behaving very strangely....

So I'm playing a game (medium, 5 opponents, all AIs set to genius, max aggression and CPU, tech trading OFF, I'm the Thalans) and I'm noticing some weird stuff.

First, NO ONE has researched trade, and the civ I just crushed, the krynn, was apparently ahead of me in tech but hadn't researched ANY weapons tech (they were building 0/0/0 defenders). I'm waaay ahead in military power despite the Yor and Drengin being present - this shouldn't happen on genius. I had no uber starting tiles and colonized a similar number of planets as to most of the AI. Does disabling tech trading nerf the AI that much? Did they waste all their time obsessively researching colonization techs?

I guess I'll try to use the CHEAT mode to see exactly what they're doing....

Cheers

Hi!
Check debug.err in your game folder, on what intelligence level they're really playing. Thge geniuous should be at about 80. There's a bug with game restart (ctrl-N) in DA campaign, that dumbes down AI for several levels. It might happen also in normal games.

this is quite possible. i've noticed the tech trading option seems to have gained a much more significant impact on how well the AI plays.

here's an idea: mod those techs with either a lower cost to research or a lower AI value. then see what happens.

Given the critical nature of the colony rush, I'm surprised how expensive those techs are. I never research them, myself. I always trade others for them. 25 weeks a piece at the time they're unlocked with 60% of my spending invested in Research is just too damned steep to bother with. In the time it takes me to bother with those, I've got the Cultural Domination line maxed out and I'm throwing out Influence starbases like they're going out of style.

Yeah, I ignored the colonization techs in this game, as I didn't find any particularly enticing planets. But I didn't make a beeline for military techs either - I researched trade & adv trade and various social techs (ethics etc) and so forth. It was only when I realized my neighbour seemed to be totally ignoring military techs that I focused on planetary invasion stuff.

dystopic:

The more I think about it, the more I think it is the case. The AI puts HUGE priority on colonization techs, even though the planets are essentially useless until you get the advanced version - which are very expensive to research. So you're basically given a massive tech advantage by default if you chose to ignore them.

p.s. The super-hive ability might be a tad overpowered. being able to build 2 factories per turn leads to some pretty crazy production.

Horatio - I'm glad you brought this thread up. I simmed a full game testing my custom race (all on Intelligent), and none of the AI players researched Trade in that game either. I think I'll start my next game, not trade trade to anyone and see if they research it. In my last game I researched it and trded it to everyone early on, so I don't know if they would have researched it or not. I also will play without the Korx as a race.

Played a game a while ago with tech trading off and none of the AIs researched trade techs. Then again in another game they did. Must be a bug then :/
