updating question

i know this was probably asked before (and dont say do a search for it cause i did 
). is sdc the only way to update the game or are there plans to do the updates like before where you can download right here from the site? the reason i ask is because i am on dialup and trying to get some of those big files is just impossible without a dl manager with a good resume feature. i know sdc has one but it doesnt work if sdc gets closed
