Why is the game so slow on a fast cpu?

I've got 3400 cpu, 1 gig of ram, and an ATI x850. Whenever there is a battle scene, or an explosion of a ship, the game pauses about five seconds before it finishes the explosion. Even in the main overview of two ships fighting, the explosion never plays out without a long stuttering pause. Is this a joke? It's a turn based game with practically zero movement at any time. How can it not properly render a tiny ship explosion in real time?

may have something to do with the processor or the vid card. Try turning the 'simple explosions' option on, that could help.

Edit: you can also turn off the explosions if you want to.

Try restarting the game. When this happens to me, the HD starts working like mad as though it was out of RAM, and restarting clears it right up.

It could also be your sound drivers causing the lag.  Check to make sure that you have the latest sound drivers for our sound card.

If you don't have an integrated sound card, make sure that you go to the website for the sound card manufacturer as they usually have the most recent drivers.

my system specs are comprable to yours: i found the best help was to turn off anti-aliasing. even though there's no movement in this game, it still uses up a great deal of memory (as much by AI processing as graphics rendering).

No idea.

I run a 2600 processor with 1.5 gigs of ram and an X850 pro, and I've never had any slowdown in the battle-viewer with DL.

Dunno about DA though.

Cari helped me fix the exact same issue (this also caused crashes for me) when I beta tested DA.

The newest sound driver didn't completely fix the problem, but once I replaced all of the audio codecs everything worked smoothly.

And don't forget to exclude the GalCiv folders (Both in My Documents and Program Files) in your real-time virus scanning options.

Pardon the dumb question but why can't Spysweeper or whatever scan these folders?
I'm not even sure how to exclude them actually but can probably dope that out if
I know why.
Thanks.
