Ship building & Upgrading Question

One thing that drives me nuts is when I want to upgrade a design. Lets say I forgot to add a range module to a design. Right now I click upgrade and instead of getting the same ship, I just get the hull and whatever extras I added on. I don't care about extras (no disrespect to those who do), but I want the engines, weapons, sensors, etc layout that I had before. Is there a way to do this or I am forever limited to rebuilding it all over again every time?

Did you uncheck the "remove functionnal components" case in the game options ?

I wonder why this is a game option instead of a decision to make in the ship builder screen?

There are times when upgraded designs will have very small adjustments, and times when upgraded designs are significant overhauls. I'd rather have the option of "removing functional components" on-the-fly in the ship builder than have to set it as a game option.

Not a huge deal, but wierd enough that I just leave that setting alone.

THANK YOU! I knew I was missing something.

Nope, I sure didn't. Never even saw it. I agree with Vogar it shouldn't be there but I am very glad it's at least an option, though I disagree with the defaults.

Yes! This would be a time-saver. One button is all I ask.

i agree that it'd save time. on the other hand, this is one of the game options that doesn't require a restart to take affect, so you can enable or disable it without too much trouble when upgrading a ship.

i keep it disabled, so that my functional comps remain on my ships when i upgrade. if i want the comps cleared, i selecte the "show only functional components" option, then remove all of them. really, it's not much work at all.

Eh... I guess I'm far more easy going when it comes to this sort of thing. Then again it could also be that I enjoy designing ships so much that I typically redesign every ship I build from scratch every game. Ok so... maybe I'm weird that way

I had the same problem. I could care less about designing ships. Has no effect on the game play. This game is already such a time sink I can't imagine whey anyone would spend time designing a ship and fiddling with all that 'extras' crap. If there was an 'artistic' civ or the 'united planets' got together to vote on your ship design, and maybe give you a bonus for something that impressed them, then MAYBE I would spend time on designing. Or, if your opponent would get scared/impressed by how your ship looked and this would affect gameplay, it would be worthwhile. You guys who design these intricate ships seriously have too much time on your hands.

That statement could broadly describe anyone who plays computer games

Agreed. I have only about 150 ship builds in my folder, and about three years worth of models in GMAX. Now if I only had the time to fuss about with a mod...
