Some help with resolution switching please!

Hi all,

My desktop is set at 1024x768 and 100 refresh. I like to play DA at 1280x1024 and my monitor supports 85 refresh at that rez. The only problem is that DA doesn't let me play that way, I get the frequency not supported message. I've been getting around that by manually setting my desktop to the settings that I play DA on and then switching back when I'm done. It works, but it's a bother. Is there a way to edit the games Ini file so it automatically switches to the correct refresh rate? I play all my games in a higher rez than my desktop and I never had this problem until GalCiv2. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I'm just guessing, but are you trying to run in windowed mode? I'm pretty sure that if you are running in full-screen mode, you should have no problem getting the functionality you want.

The game does not, but your system video settings should allow you to accomplish this. If you have an ATI card, you can set the refresh rate override for games in the CCC Display Options. I'm not sure where this would be in nVidia's panel as I don't have any modern nVidia cards myself, but if it doesn't have a similar setting you should be able to do it with a utility such as RefreshForce if need be.

If you have an NVIDIA card the Coolbits registry hack should add the refresh rate options. Take a look on-line for it - plenty of web sites offer it for download (or explain how to add the key manually in the registry).

Thanks everyone for the replies!

I used to have coolbits installed but I suppose the last official Nvidia drivers erased the settings. I downloaded and installed the registry changes and overrode the rez and refresh rates in the control panel...works like a charm!

One last question for anyone who reads this and has SLI...Since Galciv doesn't appear to have a profile I created one and was wondering what settings gave the best results?
Split frame, AFR1, AFR2 or single GPU? Also does the game support manually increasing the AA past 4X? I tried the 8X option and didn't see any difference visually...possibly because it simply wasn't applied when the game started?
Thanks guys!

I'm not sure about standard SLI, but nVidia's SLI drivers are known to not get along well with GC2 (at least as concerns the 7900/50 GX2 models).

Thanks kryo, that's what I'm running a 7950. So far no problems with my custom profile. I'll wait and see if Nvidia releases any more drivers. Though not really necessary, game runs at 75fps or more always.
