dark avatar choppy even with graphics all the way down

I'm running on a 1.5 ghz pentium m with integrated graphics (intel 850).

I found death lords to be very playable on my system even with graphics turned all the way up. Moving and rotating space when zoomed in on the map didn't result in spectacular frame rates, but it wasn't that bad at all. Now when I launch dark avatar, I find that there are long pauses when I try to move, rotate or anyting, and that it's completely unplayable. These problem persists with all graphics options turned down to zero, which is ridiculous, since textures aren't even being displayed.

I should mention that when I zoom out to the point where all the planets and ships become just icons, all of a sudden the framerate becomes perfectly smooth.

I've heard other people complain about DA running much choppier than DL even on pretty decent systems, does anyone know any fixes, or anything to help alleviate the problem? Why would there be such a change during the upgrade? Is the DA team aware of the choppyness and looking into performance problems?

I wonder if that old pentium is the problem, I run a pentium 4 which is 3.40 GHz and it works just fine graphically.

Try lowering or increasing the anti-aliasing, which could help.

Yes.

For now, all I could say is to turn down as many visual settings as you can in the game's options.

Hey Catphive,

When you a moment, could you post your Debug.err file up here. A more detailed look at your specs would be wonderful!

Thanks!

Also, let us know if you're running Vista, which may not be playing nice with your intergrated card.

Ya im getting this problem as well the game just isnt enjoyable trying to move the map around gives awful frame rates even if i zoom all the way out my specs are pritty high so i can only assume its a bug with the game nvidias drivers or vista.

Hello all-

I'm having the same problem. system is as follows:
3200+ AMD
Nforce3 250
7900gs
creative x-fi
2GB Memory
Vista Ultimate

I get very very slow scroll speed on the galactic map, on the order of 1fps. I'm running most other games ok, such as WoW, bf2142, etc. Does GalCiv2 used directsound3d? Same system under xp, game runs fine

Good day,

I just bought DA after playing regular GalcivII for a while and I just ran into the same lagging problem as described above.
It was all fine until about year 2232 when it started lagging bad, even with everything in low settings. The galaxy size is medium with 5 other races.

My system is:

P4 2.8gig
1 gb ram
ATI Radeon 9800 pro
Windows XP Pro

Thanks

well I have a P4 2.8 gig Nvida Gforce 6800 with 1.5 gig ram running on Vista Ultimate and have slow scrolling speeds (like 1 fps)on DA. Nvida was close to fixing the problem apparently but still, no cigar.

I'm also experiencing this at some point in several games. It seems as though things are going fine until at some point the memory use just explodes. In my current game, this happened fairly early in the game.

Turning down the graphics doesn't resolve the problem. Looking at it in detail, it doesn't seem to be a consistent slowdown in the graphics. Animations run fine for a second, then stop for half a second, then fine for another half second, brief pause, and so on. It's not at all like the consistent slowdown I get when say 300 Drengin corvettes are on-screen at once.

It also introduced major static and breakup in the music and sound effects, though turning all the sounds off doesn't affect the game-loop hiccups.

That's a GC2 debug, not from DA. DA has its own copy in GalCiv2\DarkAvatar.

Re: choppy gfx. I've noticed this myself and I think I've got one possible cause. Game started out fine, but then (as a human) I built my first constructor. *Every* time it was potentially visible on the main galactic map (even if behind part of the UI) my framerate would drop to a crawl. If I clicked well away from the constructor, great framerate. If I zoomed out to where the models disappeared, great framerate. If I salvaged my constructor or moved it around a planet, great framerate. Btw, I have *no* idea why I can't create a new line in this editor, lol. **In any case** I think there's a problem with the 3d models with some of the ships that's the root cause of my choppiness. - Mankynd

I think I'm having a similar problem. I just started a game with a race that uses the Drengin ship style, and some of the hulls and a few components make the game chug, for some reason. I don't remember having this problem with my other custom race, which uses the Human ship style.

AMD Athlon XP 2500+
1 GB RAM
GeForce 6600
Windows XP Pro SP1

EDIT: According to a friend of mine, who's having the same problem, the problem resides in the textures, not the actual 3D models. Why? Because, apparently, the massive slow-down disappears when textures are disabled. But of course, there's nothing more boring than playing with plain 3D models. Also, he mentioned certain hulls from other races than the Drengin make the game choppy as well, for the same reasons.

I thought that it was anti-aliasing that was causing the lag and framerate problems in my game but it wasn't. When i turned off the bump mapping and or ship rendering in the video options menu i got greatly improved results. The biggest problems came when i scrolled over stacked ships or planets with lots of tiny ships defending them. The devs should come up with a button that turns off rendering for ships that defend planets and create an icon that represents stacked fleets or ships. This should help in the overall performance.besides why use all that power to render what you can't see anyway?

We don't render ships that are defending a planet, unless you're zoomed in really close and you have the little ships flying around.  You can turn that off in the options screen, though.

As for the lag while scrolling, does it help if you hit the little button that hides the minimap + context area?

We will see what we can do to improve performance for 1.6

I get massive performance hits as well once a lot of ships start appearing (tons of stacks). I'm talking framerates under 15 (when normally over 40).

P4 2.8 ghz
ATI x800, 256 meg
2 gigs of RAM

Seems strange. I turned off textures for asteroids and that helped a little bit. Only turning textures off on ships seems to really help but of course it looks not so good. I turned off showing orbiting ships and so forth.

OK,

I am having the same sort of problem. I was running the game smooth as silk with all of the settings turned to max under Windows XP Pro. I just upgraded (actually did a clean install) to Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit and now the scrolling, rotating and zooming are extremely choppy. In fact it does not update the screen until I stop moving the mouse, and then it just lurches to where it should be. Also, if I hold down the keyboard key and scroll in any direction, it doesn't update the screen for at least a second or two, then jumps to where it should be. This makes the game very unplayable.

I have the newest beta drivers from nvidia. I also have worked to find the most current drivers for all of my hardware under Vista 64 bit (all standard releases except for the beta nvidia drivers). This appears not to be a settings problem at all, because I turned everything to the lowest quality and turned off all of the sound and it still was just as choppy as when it was all turned up.

The battles are perfectly smooth and nothing seems to be slow besides the scrolling, zooming and rotating. Please help ASAP. Thank you very much.

My system specs are as follows:

Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit
Athlon X2 4400+
nvidia Geforce 7800 GT
1 GB RAM
nvidia nForce 4
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Gamer

This is a known issue with nVidia cards under Vista. Cari has notified her contact at nVidia so that they can look into it and see if they can do anything about it.
OK,

Interestingly enough, the suggestion that Cari had about "does it help if you hit the little button that hides the minimap + context area" was spot on, and the scrolling, rotating and zooming are smooth as silk again (when the context area is hidden). I am happy about that because I can play it again (with a slit amount of hastle). I am also happy that this is a known issue. I guess I will keep waiting and checking here for any info. Thank you very much for your help kryo and Cari.

I'm having the same problem as well, it's not really an issue for me though since I play the entire game zoomed out to icons, I find it's easier to keep track of things that way and know what's going on.

Entropy Avatar,

Make sure that you have the latest sound card drivers. The Miles Sound System is generally happiest with the newest drivers.

I played around with DA again today to see if I could pin down the problems more (I was the original poster for this thread), and I've made a few discoveries. In brief, it seems to be a problem with the way ships are lit.

It's definitely the ships that are slowing things down. If I destroy all my ships, then everything else runs smooth as butter even with graphics turned all the way up. Planets and asteroids don't seem to slow anything down at all.

Ships slow things down even with all the graphics settings turned down, including with ship textures, and bump mapping turned off.

So what's different about ships than other objects in the scene that could be causing a problem? Ships don't have so many polygons that it should slow anything down. On closer inspection I find that ships seem to be dynamically lit by the stars they are near, whereas planets, stars, and most everything else I see is lit only be ambient and emissive lighting.

A lot of graphics cards have a hard time dealing with objects lit be a number of different light sources, and I think I've seen this behavior on my card when playing a few other games and generally turn the number of light sources way down. It would really nice if a similar setting that would limit the number of lights that each ship could be lit by could be set, then I could turn it down and it would probably fix my performance issues. Personally I'd be happy if ships were lit by a single directional light source.

Another thing to check would be to see if you are lighting ships differently in DA than in DL, since the performance seemed to have gone down quite a bit during that transition for me. Did ships used to be lit by nearby stars?

I'll put my .err file below

I think catphive has figured out the preformance problem with this game(at least for me).i turned the bump mapping and hardware transform and lighting back on which i thought was the problem and turned the specular intensity slider down to 0 (this slider is responsible for light shinning on ships)and now i have fully detailed ships with no framerate problems any more. any one having preformance problems (lag)please try this and let me know if this works for you. good luck.
