User-made ship styles on custom races(?)

This morning I finally finished all the different ships needed to make a custom ship style for my custom race (I use drengin hulls). But I find that I can't create a custom style for my race, the box is still grayed out. So I try to make a custom opponent, and lo and behold the box isn't grayed out. I make my style and save it. When I try to use that style that I saved on my custom race again, it shows up as the default drengin hull, even though it is my custom style. It works fine for opponents, but not for me   .

Is this supposed to happen or am I just unlucky?

Yes. The customized templates in the styles only apply to the ships the AI designs for itself, so there is no effect on a human player (which is why it's greyed out for you and not the AI).

If you want to replace the core ships (particularly the survey, colony, and miner ships you start with) with designs of your own that will appear when you make your own style, see this thread where I helped someone else do the same thing.

Thank you, Kryo. That explains a lot.

Another quick question: After you assign your custom race the modified style, is there any way to use previously created ships/templates in that style instead of crafting all new ones? (I ask this because I have around 45 or so detailed ships that would be a major pain to recreate.)

If you just make a new style using the in-game interface it will still share a prefix with the style you made it from, so the two will share all their ships.

If you make a new style with a new prefix as covered in that thread, you just need to make copies of the .shipcfg files for your templates and change the prfix on them to whatever you set for the style.
