I got Galciv2 working on Vista

Ok, let me just pony up some info:

First off, my install of Vista was a clean install, I then install Nvidia's 100.54 drivers over whatever Vista used as native drivers. Galciv2 would not run, only crash to the desktop as it got to the menu screen.

Nvidia releases their 100.64 driver. I uninstalled the 100.59 driver using Vista Uninstall control panel and installed the 100.64 drivers. The game still crashed on me.

So then I tried using Driver Cleaner to clean out all the Nvidia drivers and get a true "clean" driver install.

I then re-installed the 100.64 drivers and glory behold the game fired up and I played for a good half hour with no problems. The game ran fine and looked good.

This is my system:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
EVGA 680i Mother Board
Corsair Dominator RAM (2Gb's)
EVGA Geforce 8800 GTS

If there is any other info any one wants just ask and I will go get it and post it here.

Actually, my computer runs pretty darn fast. I have no complaints.

My only major complaint was that Galciv2 would not run and now it does, so all it well.

no, i have been using windows xp for some time now though. After using it for several years, i have even been considering going back to windows 98. So i certainly wouldn't be interested in windows vista.

I suppose i should be using Linux!

Well, I understand some peoples reluctance to move forward, but time will force everyone to Vista as it has forced everyone to Xp.

If you go back to 98, your gonna find a lack of driver support and software compatability. Its not even worth the hassle to run old Operating Systems.

Same thing with Linux, while you will find better drivers and support for Linux now than you will for Win98, its still pretty shallow compared to Xp and soon Vista.

Thats just reality my friend.

Windows 98 is a steamy pile of crap. Why someone would choose to run it is beyond me.

Anyway, I've got Vista, and luckily I've had no problems with running any programs on it at all. GalCiv 2 worked right off the bat.

I just keep different OS's on different drives. I've got XP, Ubuntu (Linux), Server 2003, and Vista That way I've got lots of choices for different things.

I have been curious about linux for some years now,, since i'm getting married and buying a house theres no way i'm going to be able to upgrade my pc for a million years so i'll probably need linux just to keep up.

I know for a fact that linux is much more efficient than windows but you need to know what your doing, and that's the problem.

Linux can be very annoying; depending on what you're doing.

For instance - in windows to install flash, what do you do? You click on something on the web page and it installs.

In Linux? I had to download a special package - then go into the terminal and type out a series of commands to unpack it and install it. It can get annoying.

Yea, you need to be into coding, but if you are, then it is definately worth the trouble.

In windows, if you get stuck, your pretty much screwed. If you want support from microsoft you have to get a rectal exam before even being allowed to ask a question!

The advantage though is that due to the sheer mass of the installed base, there's a good chance that for any problem you have, at least a few thousand other people have had it, and at least a few of them have posted about the problem (and posbbily a solution for it) online.

Whats a good third party website for that?

I have always wanted to know how to disable the auto insert notification for windows xp. In windows 98 you can find it in the hardware manager for cd rom drives but it has dissapeared in xp?

autoplay really drives me crazy!!!!

Besides that though, annoyances.org can be pretty handy.

You can disable autoplay entirely with Tweak UI.

I'm still using Win2k. No need to move up to XP or Vista for me. I have Linux running on the other computers I own. I decided to move to Linux a few years ago and just did it. I started with the distro DSL, then Knoppix, now I am running Debian(Sarge). Installing the newest Flash was simple. I have yet to use Wine, but it keeps getting better all the time also.

Vista feels like the next ME, it feels like it will have a short lifespan before the next MS OS is out.

I feel that Windows is good for some. Linux is good for some. Mac is good for some. If only more programmers would get on the OpenGL bandwagon and start coding games in that, we could see what runs better for different games. Yes DX is easier to code for, but OpenGL can run with it.

For someone looking to disable the autoplay feature in XP, I believe that installing Daemon Tools will disable it for good when you first install it. Be aware that some games treat Daemon Tools as cheat software and some games will not run with it installed. GC2 works fine.

Still running fine, tonight I'll get a chance to play for a few hours and do a real stress test on it.

As for Driver Cleaner, I am using the latest $9.99 version. I have used the free version for years and decided to buy it to show my appreciation for such a great product. I think the only differecne between the free version and the one you pay for is that the one you pay for can check your driver version and see if there is a newer driver available from the manufacture.

Ok, I put in a non stop 3 hour session last night and it purred like a kitten.

I cant believe how much cooler the game is than the beta was. They were holding some stuff back from us.
