AI ships still attack protected traders

Has anyone else had the AI try to attack your freighters when you have Galactic Privateer? The ships/fleets just sit as close to the freighters as they can and try to attack and "pursue" it, but of course they can't destroy it. It becomes a bit cheesy for the human because quite a few ships/fleets will spend a long time on this, and you can just pick them off at will or even just ignore them.

I didn't expect DA to still have this problem. Why's it so difficult to fix? I hope, for the sake of everyone else, it's just a problem that my configuration is giving! I love the Privateer, but I'm thinking of foregoing it just because it can introduce that kind of cheese.

There is nothing new about AI fleets hanging around stupidly, galactic privateer or not!

Incidently, i noticed in the DL campaign that dreadlord ships in a fleet could still kill mini freighters even though i had the galactic privateer?

Many times. I used to think that this was rather funny; a fleet of battlecruisers following a single minifreighter back and forth along it's route.

Neither did I. The GP are a group of hired guns that are very good at escorting freighters. I don't have a problem with the AI trying to attack them. But after a time, (three attacks perhaps?)it should learn that the situation is hopeless, and should move on.

In the DL campaign, one of the missions I built the GP and the DL keep trying to attack my freighters for a single turn. After that they got right torqued off and came and invaded just about all of my planets. I've never seen the AI get 'stuck' on attacking minifreighters other than that.

Yes, the ships are still the same, though I'm not sure I'm meaning the same thing you are. The sizes and weapons are the same.

@RogueIdea: AI fleets in DA will just follow the traders unless there's a closer target.

In DA, I haven't seen DL ships in a fleet yet. But as to your first point, the AI fleets don't just "hang around stupidly", as far as I've seen. They go after targets. I'm not sure what you're meaning. There has been a time or two when I've expected them to crush an incoming fleet of transports I've had, and for some reason they've not done it. Other than that, though, they tend to try to destroy things when you're at war with them! I'm talking about them trying to destroy freighters that they cannot destroy, and keeping at it indefinitely.

I havn't played DA yet.

Understandably a problem. I mean you could even create trade routes specifically to distract enemy ships to allow you to acieve some goal.

Yep, that's where this particular cheese could melt into the fabric of our game!

In my experience, until the trade route is established, your freighter is vunerable to attack. Once the route is set however, the "power of the Privateer" kicks in. If I feel that my "virgin" freighters are in danger, I send an escort to accompany them to their destination. Once the route is set, the GP kicks in and all is good.

My first post - hope this helps!

The templates have been updated, and are more race-specific. A very nice update. Also, there are many more pieces of 'jewelry' available to make your ships even more unique. If you are asking whether or not you can use your DL ship templates in DA, the answer, I believe, is yes; you will have to manually move them, however. There are posts on the forum which give the directions for doing so. "this particular cheese could melt into the fabric of our game!" - Nice turn of the phrase, CM. I don't remember seeing that one before.

There's now an excellent online DA strategy guide, which Frogboy has just posted a link to.

One of the major suggestions it gives for building your economy is to build the Galactic Privateer to protect your trade routes. This issue will now become bigger than it's been before.

If anyone else gets a chance to send in a saved game with this bug, PLEASE zip it and email it to [email protected]. The more of these we send in, the more able they'll be to fix this soon.

I'm absolutely sick of this bug. It really slows down games and makes me not want to build the privateer. As it stands now, I wouldn't quite call it broken, but many people could think that way, especially if they play larger galaxies than I do (small or medium).

Thanks!

Edit: just posting a debug to the forums doesn't work nearly as well as sending in a zipped save game. Last in efficacy is just posting that you've seen the same thing. I don't think that goes very far to motivate the devs to work on the problem.

I have played DL with Galatic Privateer and observed large pirate fleets attacking freighters in the trade routes. But in some cases, the little freighter was destroyed, and I got a message about the trade route being shut down. However, the route never disappeared and the little freighter was resurrected at my world and just started again. I read earlier in this post about Dread Lords (destroying?) them too? maybe it just takes a very large fleet???

Addendum: It may have been a pre-version 1.4 DL game. I'm not sure anymore.

Yeah, because they should NEVER be destroyed once you have the GP.

Now, if oddities like pirates, peacekeepers, or Dread Lords are really supposed to be able to destroy protected freighters (but I've seen DL ships vainly trail freighters for ages), then that's not the end of the world for me. I'm just upset that it really makes the game slow down to have any ships you're at war with trying to attack your freighters. On my system it's about 1 minute/botch attack attempt, and that adds up quickly on larger maps.
