Late Game Minors

...may as well just be a free uber planet event

Dunno if this was the same in DL, but in DA when minor races spawn late in the game it might as well be a "free uber world" event for the nearest (or most ready) race. They spawn on a class 15ish world, with 1b pop, no ships, no hope (at least on challenging).

In my current large/challenging game I had one pop up in the middle of my territory and took it out within a few turns since I had transports chillin'. Then another popped just outside my territory, 2 AIs go to war with the new minor(without transports - and with nothing to fight against - makes zero sense), and then I take it over in a few turns. So within 10 turns I got two new uber worlds with near zero effort. As a bonus, due to my influence bonuses, the 2nd world also split a rival's territory in half and I'll get easy possession of two of his asteroid fields, since asteroid fields seem to flip very easily. Pretty nice spoils for a "war" that featured two unescorted troop transports.

Seems a bit ridiculous. Well, minor races magically spawning/colonizing at size zero worlds and turning them into better planets than most is already ridiculous. But having them magically spawn just to be galactic fodder is even more ridiculous.

This is similar to the complaints some have about the Dread Lords Mega Event. Easy pickings of a high quality planet.

Yup, late game minors really need to spawn with appropriate defenses. Dread Lords need to spawn with a very nasty fleet.

It isn't much more difficult mid game. The minors always have low advantage factors and nearly worthless fleets. But they are fun to have around. I usually don't take them over, but use them to fight proxy wars against civs I don't like, since the AI will declare war on them sooner or later. Gift them a few good ships and watch them bloody the nose of your rivals.

I'm amazed that these newly arrived disadvantaged races would actually declare war on anyone...

Hi!
Seems a bit ridiculous.

That's why I several months ago turned minors off, and they'll stay off until I'll read they can survive mid-game on masochistic.

I seem to remember that when I first played GCII DL that the minor races would have tons of ships protecting homeworld. Ever since the 2nd or 3rd patch they care more about building useless Starbases they can't use (IE influence) instead of defenses for the homeworld. It a lot of wasted credits and might be one of the reasons they are fodder now.

Oh the best thing to do with Late Game Minors if they are near you is to wait until they build up the planet a little, hopefully with a few Capital type buildings up. That way when you invade you have a really uber planet.

Its hard to keep the AI off from them though.

The only thing I use minors for is income. They'll send freighters to trade with you.

I really like the minor races (hence my name)and believe that minor races should be more challenging.

There should be (if there isn't one already) a mega event that turns a minor race into a major race, gives them a vote in the UP, gives them all technologies of the most advanced empire, and a pretty good fleet that can at least defend them until they build up. Maybe they should get a couple planets, too.

I like a bit of that...

I think it should be possible for them to be UP members but obviously would not have as much influence as the major players. Just like the UN we have today!

Afterall, the UP is about 'galactic law' right?

If they were at war with a major race and losing, the UP could grant them some fleets of ships for wartime purposes. Parts of the fleet would be contributed by the major civilizations. That way, they would stand a better chance.

Or the UP should make laws concerning minors.

I've often found them more useful than just another free planet, particularly late in the game when its just me and one other race. My last game I had one spawn deep in one corner of my territory. Upon commencing the final war I sent the nice fleet of freighters I had parked around their world and replaced all my trade routes almost immediately. Of course it took them a few turns to gain value but it was a nice little perk that reduced the deficits of my wartime economy.
