Designing Ships for AI

First of all being a newbie of DA I would like to know how can i design ships for other AI races.
Secondly i have a question about designing ships for AI and AI efficiency.
Core ships are often really weak if compared to designed ships so i wonder if i design ships for AI, does AI uses best ship available (core or user designed), so for example instead of a weak core DEFENDER i design a ship which is a DEFENDER with better engines, does AI uses better ship?In other words the more ship i design for AI does improve AI effectivity in war because it has a wider range of ships to choose from?

You only give the AI templates to work from, which are just hulls with jewelry on them. The AI will (and always has) adds parts as it desires to the templates it has available to create its own ship designs. It does not use core ships, the templates just let you control the appearance of AI designs (but not the functions).
