The Theme of Violence

The Theme of Violence

A common thread in everything these 'days'

Violence!

That word is loaded with meanings that all, seemingly, worm there way in to the games we play, movies we watch, stories we tell each other, etc... WHY? Are we so undisciplined that we resort to a basic impulse to entertain ourselves through the suffering of others (imagined or not) or entertain that PART of us?

I am a fully thinking intelligent human being, so I know all the social engineering arguments and biological arguments as to why? Thats not what I am asking... I am asking because I can't answer the question without going for the simple answer = because we like to "win". I would have said a stronger word (kill), but I am trying to keep this pinned down to a "computer game, RPG, board game level".

Just about every computer or console game has violence coded into it now days... I remember when games were 'games' like checkers, chess, Kings on the Corner, etc... Oh, you might be thinking that I have something against violence in games but I don't, I play the same games we all do, and excel at FPS to be quite blunt. But, there are days when turning on the TV, or listening to a Podcast of the news that my mind tends to lump it together with my game playing... kind of an overload of violence and information, I suppose.

So, does the violence in computer games also bother you guys/gals sometimes? Or, on a small tangent, are games too complex anymore (GalCiv 2, Civ 4, etc...)and really are more "war situation simulators" instead?

What are your thoughts?

SIMPLE ANSWER: if you dont like violent games, go get Tetris and enjoy.

I hate when parents, who don't have the time to raise their own kids, try to ban games and other media for the rest of us ADULTS.

If i search deep within my heart as to what makes killing in games so fun, i would have to blame the constraints of modern society.

Some things which truely inspire deep desires for death and destruction would be;

1) traffic
2) regulations, laws, regulations, regulations, regulations aaarrrgggh
3) political correctness gone mad
4) the cost of acommodation
5) people that go on tv and complain about stupid things and cause even more laws and regulations.

thats about it for now

Hollywood still puts plenty of money into romance flicks where no one gets hurt, and light comedies where none of the jokes are cutting, and you can't tell me that demon-spawn Barney the Dinosaur hasn't been a good earner

True, I did leave sex out of my initial post - that sells DVDs, too, but (at least in mainstream media) mostly in an implied fashion, whereas movie violence knows few bounds. And I classify Barney as toddler-level fare; it does well overall because it has wide appeal, but no single episode, video game (they exist), or movie if there were one would be a really top earner.

Anyway, I strayed pretty far off the OP's computer game topic with that stuff. I think Mystikmind brings up a good point about game violence being a sort of release valve for people living in a nanny society like ours.

If someone were to come out with a sex-based game that was at close to being as immersive as the violence-based games we have now, it would probably sell quite well. Except it would never be allowed onto the shelves in the first place.

Whatever you may make of my arguments, I still believe that sales - sales history in particular - is what drives violent content in games. Game companies see what sells, and they try to design games that they know will sell. Why take a financial risk with something new when you already know what works?

Remember the two children shooting each other with toy guns in the movie 'terminator2'. Inspiring two famous movie quotes;

"were not going to make it are we, humans i mean"
"it's in your nature to destroy yourselves".

hehehe, almost like quoting scripture!

It doesn't bother me but I think that you 'underestemate the power of stupid peaple in large groups'; that is although they will not go out and shoot someone they (the teenagers overloaded on vilent vidiogames and stuff) can adopt an atitude of ... well I don't know how to say it.

Does anyone get what I'm saying?

No,
Seems like your about to describe what a large group of stupid people are going to do or say and then suddenly "well i don't know how to say it".
