Vista Crash

Has anyone had crashes with Vista Ultimate yet? It worked fine with the RC 2 release, but when I upgraded to the offical version, it has crashed right after I launch it.

Please go to C:\Program Files\Stardock\Totalgaming\GalCiv2 (or wherever you installed the game at), open the debug.err file you find there in notepad, and copy/paste the contents into a post here. This will give us some technical information that can help troubleshoot your problem.

I had this exact same problem with the Vista Ultimate final build. I switched back to XP specifically so I could play Dark Avatar.

The final release version Catalysts were released today--give them a try.
Not sure what you meant by Catalysts. I have loaded the latest Vista updates and the game seems to be at the latest version. Can you explain a little more what I should be downloading?
Catalysts - video drivers from ATI.

I'm having the same problem with Vista Ultimate 64-bit but with an nVidia card. I do have the just-released (but still oh-so-crappy) nVidia Vista Drivers.

I also have the latest beta 64-bit Creative drivers as well.

The crash occurs immediately after the Intro. If I set SkipIntro=1 I can get it to last about 3 seconds in the UI before crashing. I've also played around with some different resolution settings (via the Prefs.ini) with no luck there.

And, FWIW, Stardock Central is installed on a different drive. That's not what I intended to do, but SC installed the game automatically and apparently SC installs the game on the same drive as the operating system rather than the same drive as SC itself is installed on. All the necessary folders referenced at the bottom of this debug log were created in the correct location and DO exist though. However they are all empty (not sure if they should be or not, but the error says it's not finding files it's looking to find).

Sigma_Hyperion, I'll check with Cari but I believe the 'flipping back buffer' error is the cause of your problems, stemming from an issue with nVidia's Vista drivers that we haven't been able to resolve with them yet.

Joebar30,

We don't have any known issues with ATI drivers on Vista, but based on where it's crashing suggests that something isn't there.  You could try doing a clean install of GalCiv2 and Dark Avatar.

Sigma_Hyperion,

The Error flipping to back buffer is an NVidia driver error. We're working with NVidia to solve the problem, but so far no luck.

Can't say I'm surprised. There's not ONE game that I've been able to get to work flawlessly (or even close) with Vista 64-bit and nVidia drivers.

I was an ATi fanboy ever since Voodoo went away and this oh-so-pricey 8800GTS was my first nVidia card. It's performance blew away that of anything ATi had on the market and I was getting a little tired of ATi's lackluster driver support over the past 10 years.

And whaddya know -- the instant I buy an nVidia card is the same instant they decide to take a massive *&$% on their customers. You'd have though Vista snuck up 'em last week with the piss-poor shape these drivers are in. Performance SUCKS. Compatability SUCKS. Yet ATi got their drivers working remarkably well even equal with XP performance in some cases on the very first try.

Hopefully you guys can get it fixed; or rather nVidia can. I'll be DLing every driver, beta or otherwise, the second it's released and I'll try it out and keep this thread up to date. At least until AMD comes out with their R600 chips next month, then I'll be packing my bags and going back to the AMD camp.

Guys, why upgrade to Windows Vista now? Windows XP works fine with the game. And what I have heard is that there are a lot of software which have problems with Windows Vista (some problems probably are due to drivers not ready for Vista as well).

Windows Vista (Ultimate) is very expensive, and the draconian activation and "Software Protection Platform" in Windows Vista may lock you out of the computer if it decides now or in the future that you are running a pirated version. Why risk this? Windows XP works fine for me, and I will avoid Vista for as long as possible.
uh... i don't like this thread mostly cause i just purchased a 8800GTS and WAS planning to upgrade to vista in about a month, sigma please post if you get your 8800gts working with vista, i'm very interested to see how long it take to fix Vista or the Nvidia drivers.

I am having the same problem here, both games crash (Galciv2 & DA) running under Vista Home Premium and a Geforce 8800GTS.

I have the latest Nvidia driver for Vista installed.
