The Newbiest Newb Question Ever

I'm so ashamed

Well, this is it. I just got GC2, set up a game, everything's gone smoothly for a day or so's worth of turns. My empire's doing fine and of course, the AI's are being stupid since I set the Intelligence level pretty low just to get a feel for the game.

Anyway, here's my Uber-Newber question: An AI Civ was about to colonize a world in a system where I'd already colonized one. I had a couple homemade "fighter" type warships in orbit that could intercept it and was willing to start a war to keep him from colonizing the planet.

But...I couldn't find the "Declare War" option, anywhere!

I went through the diplo screen and could only set up a proxy war (Attack... option).
I right clicked on his ship with my fighters and they went and "said hello". (i.e. did nothing)
I went to my government/politics screen and couldn't find anything.

Finally, I even RTFM, but to no avail.

So please...I'm begging now...someone tell an old Civ-series warmonger how to cause chaos and death and destruction on an interstellar level (without genetically changing into a Drengin warlord, that is)?

Just get on with the head-breaking, and they'll get the message

(In standard GC2, there is no explicit 'declare war' option--just start attacking, or declare by proxy as you've already seen. Dark Avatar does include a specific Declare War option, in case you feel like giving them fair warning )

Thanks for helping this old warhorse out. Time to go bust some skulls, or plates, or exoskeletons....

Why would these ships fail to attack? As Kryo pointed out, this should have started the war you wanted. I can only think of two possible reasons. First, when you set up the game, was the civ in question a teammate? You can't attack a member of your team, ever. Secondly, since, as you say, you sent
a couple homemade "fighter" type warships

did you, in fact, fail to arm them? Or is there some other way that this could have happened?

Nope - I think since it was the end of the turn, they may have been one move short of the colony ship and it was ready to land. Bad timing, in other words. I went back to the saved game and sent the fighters before I actually saw the colony ship this time, to get there a turn earlier, and this time when I right-clicked on the colony ship I did get the "If you attack this there will be war" warning (and the ensuing war when I went ahead ). So that's the only reason I can think of that they didn't attack it in the first try.

Ah, well there's our answer. Glad you got it figured out. Good gaming.
