A gift from the Drengin

Hello everyone.

My first post here. I never played GalCiv 1, but I'm having a blast with GalCiv 2. Currently playing at Normal level. I just wanted to share a story about a game I was playing. I was Terran. It had all come down to 4 races remaining. Me, the Drengin, the Altarians, and the Arceans. The Arceans had been fighting the Drengin for most of the game. Currently they were kicking the crap out of the Drengin. I had been playing nice all game, tech trading with everyone, setting trade routes with everyone, etc. I even helped the Drengin out during their wars with the Arcean. Gave them Planetary Defense, and the like, when they asked for help. I don't know if that was the deciding factor here but, on the verge of defeat, the Drengin declared war on me, and then promptly surrendered to me. All in the same turn, leaving the Arceans with only the Drengin planets they had physically taken at great cost to themselves. I think I got about 5 planets absolutely free. Sweet.

Has this happened to anyone else? It was like the Drengin AI did that out of spite. Sort of like, "If I'm going down, be damned if my enemy is getting the remainder of my planets. I'm giving them to the guy that was nice to me and helped me out when I asked." Weird.

The Ai will factor in several things when deciding who to surrender to. Some of those are alignment, past relations and a few other things I'm unsure of. I have noticed though, they seem to be a little more likely to surrender to you if you help them out when they ask.

I am playing a gigantic map as the Terrans. I haven't fired a shot the entire game. The Drengins were losing the war to the Torians, so they surrendured to me, giving me about 12 high quality planets. Later, the Yor were losing badly to the Torians, and surrendured to me as well, giving me about the same number of high quality planets (included one with a precursor mine and a precursor library). However, by the time they gave me the planet with the precursor library, it didn't matter, since I had just finished researching every single tech in the game (except for those needed for a technological victory, since I had disabled that victory ability). Everybody is friendly with me, I have a good alignment, and I have never made any sort of hostile threat or demand. Little do they know that the friendly Terrans have built up an overwhelming, insurmountable technological lead, and will soon crush the galaxy with huge ships equipped with doom rays, black hole torpedoes, and black hole guns, as well as the most advanced defenses available, and incredible speed. My tiny fighters will soon be taking out their battleships!

As far as helping out a losing civ when they ask for help, I can give them 1 BC and they seem to heap tons of praise on me, when really I am just mocking them with my insignificant gift. Does helping out a losing civ make the civ that is winning them angrier with you?
