Could anyone help a newbie out I can not find the area on the game anywhere where I can declare war on another race. I know it sounds stupid but its killing me.

If you contact a different race for diplomacy, you can offer to attack the race you want war with. Also, attempting to attack any ship/base of the race you want war with will prompt you to declare war.

Shoot somebody. Inveade somebody. Offer war in diplo screen.

I believe that the diplomacy option of declaring war was introduced in Dark Avatar expansion. If you are playing any version before it, you probally going to have to give your opponent a bloody nose first.

Even though its more realistic in some ways, whats the benefit of actually "declaring" war on someone prior to attacking them, and depriving yourself of that first free attack(you know, before you have to defend your territory as well)? Is there any sort of game mechanic that makes it worthwhile to do so?

in some situations if you have political victory on it may just be better to make a strong military and bring them into your alliance and attack who you wish that way (in case thay dont want to be in your allaince) you get more points. belive me it works.
