What would you miss (or not miss) if you could only play DL?

Despite my best intentions, I've been lured away from the DA beta by the Metaverse activists. I'm pretty sure I'm committed for the (huge map) long haul to my first Metaverse game but I'm starting to think of my current game as "the old days." This has made me notice the things I like and miss most from a DA POV:

1) The mega events are a swell idea (even if I might still want some of them tweaked for "balance").
2) The environment stuff makes the colony rush much more satisfyingly complicated.
3) Custom AIs are a great addition and I hope they will work with the Metaverse.
4) Launch direction for new ships is sweet.
5) The asteroid fields add more than I appreciate yet.
6) The tech tree UI changes are subtle but nice none the less.
7) Sabotage is a very fun addition but I wish it didn't come at the expense of making "passsive" espionage (intelligence gathering w/o damage to rivals) impossible.

Please talk amongst yourselves

From galciv1 to galciv2 i would miss....

Terror stars,
the 'terraforma' project being useful
starbase defences that are worth installing
selling planets for allot of money
unlimited space on planets - yea um planets are, well you see planets are, how can i say it.... *BIG* with lots of, lots and lots of surface area. So planets running out of space is kind of extremely dumb realistically.

I basicly love everything DA is bringing to the table but I do have gripes about some of the new features or features that did not get implemented.

1. Land Combat is way too shallow for my taste. I was hoping for total overhaul of this part of the game.

2. While espionage is fun and all but it too feels bit shallow. There is not enought stuff to do with them. Just sabotage or counter sabotage.

3. New threaties are nice but I really was looking forward to some deeper diplomacy. Especially the UP has not changed a bit, I was hoping for more control over UP decisions.

4. What I seriously miss from GC1 is the SPACEBAR button. Remember how pressing that sweet button moved all your ships auto moves? How can so little thing that is missing annoy me so much is beyond me.

Now I realize I missed bit the point of this thread, but had to vent abit of frustration. Guess there always will be GC3 in the future.

1) Super Hive (is that getting nerfed, or am I going to be able to play my all-factories strategy in the final?)
2) Tech-requiring planetary environments. That drastically alters the colonization race. I'd almost certainly do better without them, but I prefer it with them.
3) Enemy AI customization
4) Lots I'm sure I don't really notice since I only played the DL demo a bit before getting DL and DA at the same time and haven't played DL since.

Oh, mega events. Those are very nice. Some of them are game-wreckers, but that's what my practice of pressing "Ctrl+S" before pressing "Enter" is for.

And the changes to the combat system, I rather like the targetting-by-weapon instead of by-ship rules. I'd prefer if weapons and defenses had a minimum and maximum roll (instead of just a maximum), but it tends to work out ok.

There's another good one I forgot, and I've also realized I should've used bullets and not numbers b/c my list is not rank-ordered.

Another thing for which I'm profoundly thankful is the "old" tab on the planetary improvement selection section of the planet screen. Previously it was simply impossible to build or revert to the older versions. It'd be a real pain to do on a wide scale, but being able to do it in specific instances is a massive improvement.

I honestly cannot see myself going back to DL for any reason. DA does what any great expansion should: expand and improve the game. I mean we get new opponents, new ships, new graphics, new techs, new spies, and new AI. We get a better fleet combat system. We get a more strategic colony rush. The new tech tree UI is very clean. While I don't use the *old* tab much in the planetary improvement screen that alone is probably worth the price for some. And I know I've left some things out too.

I think the thing that impresses me the most is the fact that Stardock took a fantastic game and made it even better. No surprise really if you look back at how DL changed through the various patchs for free mind you. I seriously cannot wait to see what we can look forward to in 2007 from them.

I'm a ship speed junkie, but I'm in recovery. I was pretty comfortably on the wagon in DA, but I'm still letting myself build max-speed constructors and freighters in my (last?) DL game.

But keithLamothe's reply about the Old tab in the planet build list has made think of another good reason for having bothered everyone with this thread: I can come back and remind myself of what I'm missing just so I can avoid months-long trips across the huge galaxies I like to play.
