Ai issue with 1 tile planets

Several times with different (AI) races I've seen that the AIs don't seem to know how to handle planets containing just one usable tile and a bunch that can be terraformed. Everytime I've seen this they have build a starport and then queued up all the terraforming. This results in a planet that is useless for ~100 turns. If only they'd build a factory first they'd have a good planet much quicker.

class 1 and i think a class 2 can have just 1 sometimes instead of two open tiles.

The AI has never been good at interrupting its autobuild queue in order to build what it really needs. It prioritized pretty well when it has a lot of open tiles, but once it gets a terraforming tech it always converts everything it can before building any improvements.

It does the same with upgrading other improvements. If you sell or trade an AI faction an improvement tech, they will upgrade those buildings everywhere before starting anything else.

Are you playing Dark Avatar? There are Class 1 and 2 planets in DA, which Dread Lords didn't have. They are much more useful than Class 4 and 5 planets because they contain loads of terraformable tiles, but they start with just the initial colony (Class 1) or the initial colony and one open tile (Class 2).

Love it. A new weapon in my arsenal of dirty tricks. Thanks, Marshall.

I have seen the AI build starports initially without factories, then they may buy a ship or two. I have seen where they do this during colonizing to buy another colony ship and launch a partial load of colonists. Leapfrog technique, as I've heard it called. Quite smart if you ask me.

Fortunately, you don't have long to wait. DA is scheduled for release in February.
