Super Pirates

Got to a point where the super pirates drop-in and start destroying everything in sight. As implemented, it's rather dumb. First off, my civilization was rather advanced at this point but the power and number of pirate ships was off the scale. Pirates should be an annoyance not a major power player with fleets of super ships. Second, there was no recognition among the other races of the problem and no opportunity to cooperate to deal with the problem. Third, pirates should steal resources rather than randomly blow-up everything. If the resources were stolen, you would have a chance to take them back, which would be more fun IMHO.

The pirate issue has been discussed allot.

Since it is extremely idiotic to imagine a galaxy 'suddenly' filling up with massivly powerful pirates, i like to just pretend it is an invasion from an unknown race which happen to go by the name 'pirates'.

That is so true. For the past few months all the posts were about the pirates being really weak since the updates. With DA it seems they have remedied this. I haven't gotten the event myself, but hearing others say that they can be eventually beaten makes me think that they aren't to powerful. The AI just needs to fight them off better so the balance doesn't end up in the players favor in the end.

I just had a game with the new pirates in Dark Avatar that basicially finished the game.
They showed up, destroyed everybodys ships and starbases except those belonging to the minor races.
Later on after I managed to get a few fleets going again, the event where everybody declares war on you happened.
2 of the 4 races immediately surrendered to me, the other 2 gave up after losing 1 planet each.

Damn! I knew I've been forgeting to call someone...

I suppose not calling one of my favorite video game characters hasn't been too much of a problem. I've gotten quite good at countering these random super pirate attacks.

Well, for the interest of having better AI, I'll offer one of my stratagies I use to counter this super event to the devs. From my experiences, pirates tend to have a defined 'territory' which they never leave, even when chasing my ships. Knowing this fact, I send every ship I have to either one sector, or a as few as I can possibly manage, to counter the the pirate threat.

From there, I try to use overwhelming numbers to try to clear a sector, or what ever number of sectors I'm working with, clean of pirates. Afterwards, I focus on building up my military forces in these 'safe' sectors, ussually to eliminate all of the pirates in the rest of my territories. I leave the rest of the pirates alone, so they can make my enemies suffer, at least until I start making their territories my own.

Concerning pirates...

It seems when they appear, they 'take the form of' the most powerful ship in the 'verse (at least -- weapons and defense-wise).

Since I don't usually build ANY ships beyond colony, constructors, surveyers, and miners till I've run the tech tree (and this strategy usually also means I sprint way ahead in techs) -- I've found the pirates - even when their are a lot of them, aren't all that tough to deal with.

For one thing, they focus exclusively on the weapon/defense of the most powerful ship. Last night, when Pirates appeared -- one race had gotten to Graviton Drivers and some middling form of armor.

All the pirates had rather powerful mass drivers and armor -- but no other weapons and defenses. Fortunately, my starbases were pretty much able to take care of themselves (though not the AI starbases... sux to be them --- and I simply started churning out my "Buccaneer Blaster" class ships... big-time armor, but all missiles and lasers.

From there, I just went pirate hunting... I got a LOT of veteran ships that will later be upgradeable to more balanced models. The pirates did have a couple HUGE fleets that were tough to take out, but in the end...

Despite the havoc they caused - I feel that I actually came out ahead. Before the pirates arrived - I had no offensive ships... now - I've got a fleet of dozens of veterans with high HP that will be great for upgrading when I'm ready to start attacking the other AI races.

Why does everyone focus on defeating the pirates?? The pirates are the best thing that could happen for a military conquest. When they attack they wipe everyone's defense? What's the point of trying to make a great ship with the best weapons? Put all your resources into research and make some really fast troop transports. The entire galaxy is really easy to conquer when no one has planetary defenses and you can outrun the pirates with your transports.

Been doing this myself by editing the entries in 'English.str' to a different name. I have used the Gorgonites as a name as it seemed to suit At least that way i dont get attacked by a rediculously overpowerful pirate race

I will have to agree. This super pirate invasion is not only dumb but it's not really fun either. It also hurts the AI much more than it does the human player. What was the logic of adding this kind of event in?

If anything, I'd rather see the minor races be more aggressive or something. The super pirate event just doesn't make any sense.

I too am a super pirate victim. It is pretty early on in the game. My strongest fleet has an attack strength of 9. Then pirate event happens, and a pirate fleet with an attack strength of 100+ shows up at my back door. Needless to say, this is not fun.

The pirate event either needs to be removed, or fixed to not have such an imbalanced fleet show up. They could destroy everything in the entire galaxy with that fleet!
