A few newbie questions

Just starting out, but I have a couple of newb questions that are bugging me:

1) When I go to the shipyard to update my ship (ie a Terran Defender), it shows to have equipment that I don't have access to (those modules don't show up as components I can use). How is this possible?

2) How do I declare war? I've looked everywhere but can't seem to find this

1) Defenders are prebuilt with some parts you may not have access to in general.

2) Kill something.

inacessible because you have haven't research some techs yet.
Usually just build your own ships...the prebuilt ones I find doesn't suit my needs from turn to turn.
Like the prebuilt colonyships/mining have 1 engine = 1pc/wk. from the start of the first turn I make new ones with 2 engines = 2 pc/wk.

Don't play sandbox, play and easy level...and you'll learn everything you need to..so that next time you can do things the right way. And you develop a your own playing style.

I usually play on huge maps...so speed is very important to me. next is weapons. If I can't beat an enemy ship..at least I can run from it...until I research more on weapon techs.

I believe there will be a "declare war" feature in the expansion pack, until then as Marcathonas says, kill something, nothing gets the point across like some good ol' fashioned killing.

Word of warning though, occasionally when setting a ship to autopilot, it will come across a mini-freighter on a trade route and the game will ask you if you are sure you want to destroy, its happened to me a couple of times, the first time it happened I clicked yes, which was a bit of a bummer, because I was wiped out.

Yep. It's in the DA beta versions already. You can actually declare war on the diplo screen.

Or you can force them to declare war. Like make em mad. Demand money. Build influence bases after they ask you not to. Park fleets by their worlds. Include transports in those fleets. Hehe.
