No in-game music

Hello,

I just got the game and installed it, and downloaded the latest version from your website and installed that too, and am really excited to play it. However, I can't get any music while in the game. It seems that I can get sound effects, but when I move the other sliders in game to change the music volume, or the middle slider, I hear nothing.

I think this is the debug report you need to help me out:

You may need to find updated drivers for your audio chipset, as they're more than five years old. Unfortunately, the debug doesn't specify the exact chipset your system uses, so I cannot advise you as to where to find them specifically.

Thank you for the quick response!

I have not updated the drivers on my laptop since I bought it, roughly five years ago as you say. But unfortunately, I'm not computer literate enough to know how to update the audio drivers on my own, and since I've now moved to America, I don't have any of the original hardware install CDs with me (they're all still in England).

I've tried to update the sound audio devices thorugh the control panel, but there doesn't seem a way to automatically connect to the internet to search for updates, which was what I was hoping for. Is there any way I can find the information of my current audio drivers - or the chipset, as you say - and report it here? If I did that, might you be able to advise me as to how to go about finding new drivers?

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 8200; here's the information from 'Sound and Audio Devices Properties' in 'My Computer':

Toshiba CDRW/DVD SDR2102
Intel(r) 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio Cont...
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Media Control Devices
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Video Codecs

All say that they're working fine.

Any ideas?

Thank you again for helping me with this.

Dell only lists this driver for Inspiron 8200 audio. It's a year newer than what you have, but it is supposed to be for a Crystal CS4205 rather than an intel chipset. I don't know if that's correct and the system just shipped with a generic AC'97 driver, or if there are different sub-models of the 8200 line and Dell only lists the one.

You can try that driver if you want, but I'd strongly recommend you back up your system or create a restore point at the very least so you can roll back to the old ones if it installs successfully but subsequently makes things worse.

If you are not confident in your ability to do this, you should find a technically-inclined friend or someone who can look at the laptop directly to do it.

Thank you, again, for the quick reply! It's really great to know that you offer this level of support - which I take to be above and beyond given that the problem may well be my rather old machine. (-:

I've just looked at the driver you mention, but I agree from looking at the rest of my system that it doesn't look as though my computer runs a Crystal CS4205. I'm thinking that Dell probably just used a generic AC'97 driver. The driver information for the Intel card is as follows:

Driver Provider: Microsoft
Driver Date: 01/07/2001
Driver version: 5.1.2535.0
Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Publisher.

And the details tab says the following:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ac97intc.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\drmk.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ks.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ks.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\portcls.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\stream.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ksproxy.ax
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ksuser.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wdmaud.drv

Provider: Intel Corporation
File Version: 5.10.3523 built by: WinDDK
Copyright: Copyright (C) Intel Corporation 1998-2001
Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Publisher.

So do you think it likely that I could get a different driver from an Intel webiste somewhere? Or from a microsoft website? Or from one of those driver websites like www.drivers.com? Or do you still think my best bet is the driver you found from Dell, if I make the backup file/restore point that you suggest?

Thanks again!

Intel doesn't offer consumer drivers for audio chipsets, since those can vary widely from board to board, and Microsoft wouldn't likely have anything better than what came with Windows itself, as it's the responsibility of the hardware companies to make drivers (Windows' built in 'check for new drivers' function is notorious for providing old or bad drivers).

As I can't simply look the system over myself (and fix it if something I try doesn't work!), I'd really just advise you to find someone local who can check it out directly like I said.

should be able to update those through microsoft. my desktop hp uses the ac97 audio and i updated thru microsoft. latest version i have is dated 10/1/2004 and is version number 5.10.0.5730. my details say im using a realtek AC 97 audio so it is different from your laptop, i would still check microsoft anyway. cant hurt anything

Ok, I've now installed the Crystal drivers from the Dell website, and the sound on my PC is still working, which is pleasing. I've gone back into the game, and am now wondering whether I'm just stupidly misunderstanding what the in-game sound SHOULD be like.

So I can hear the sound in the tutorials fine; and I can hear the music on the main page fine, with the woman wailing (which amuses me muchly - Star Trek circa 1960 springs to mind...) that I TOOK to be the ingame music too. But when I actually begin a game, I only hear very low background sound. I played a few turns, and each of the aliens still have their characterstic background music; I can hear sounds as I click on planets in the main map; and when I encountered my first anomaly, the music for the video was working.

So now I'm beginning to wonder whether this is, indeed, the total of the sound experience for galciv2: is the wailing woman just in the title screen?

If so, I feel really stupid, and am sorry to have wasted all of your time. But at least I've updated my sound drivers to the giddy year of 2002!

Yes, the rest of the music is only orchestral. Only the title theme has vocals.
