Multiple Web Links in forum Posts Fail

Multiple Web Links in forum Posts Fail

When posting to the forums if you try to include more than one Web Link in your post it only creates one link and the others are posted as text.

This has been happening for quite some time and is still happening even though other aspects of forum performance have seemed to improve. You can easily replicate this by posting multiple links in a reply. It seems to be a problem in converting from the
[ link = ... [ / link ] format to the < a href = ... < / a > format. There appears to be an extra > inserted in the text portion of the link.

While we're documenting issues for the web team, I want to take a moment to say that the issue that prompted me to make the "This is the buggiest web site ever" post has apparently been resolved by the latest forum build (is build the right terminology).

My issue was on threads with 50 plus replies mostly by folks with a lot of medals. The Galactic Diplomats thread was a prime example. I had gotten around the inevitable "We're sorry for the inconvenience but IE has to close" message that was due to pngfilt.dll by disabling "Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting" in IE6. Of course by doing this I could never see anyone's medals.

I re-enabled "Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting" while checking if it had an effect on the reply box. It didn't but I didn't go back and instantly disable it again. I've since checked out a number of threads that would have crashed IE6 at least a hundred times and it hasn't crashed once.

This is with the same 900 MHz POS Celeron and IE6 that everyone in the world (well at least the forums) said should have been on the nearest trash heap years ago. Clearly something has changed that fixes this issue. I do have to wait a bit on some threads while 500 to 600 medal icons are repainted in a long thread, but the performance is night and day. Literally, I would crash 2-3 times a *minute* on such threads before. Now I haven't crashed since.

Thanks.

Hopefully a final issue for the web team to resolve.

I often go back and forth between accessing these forums from forums.galciv2.com and forums.stardock.com. One reason was the pngfilt.dll issue which didn't happen on forums.stardock.com because medals aren't displayed there. Another reason is just one of traffic. Sometimes when traffic is high I seem to get less delay accessing through forums.stardock.com.

Anyway, I currently have an issue when going to forums.stardock.com. When I first enter the site it reconizes me as Mumblefratz but once I click on a post or select the GalCiv2 forum, it forgets who I am. If I login in again it accepts my login and dumps me back to the top but as soon as I click on a post or select the GalCiv2 forum, it forgets who I am again.

The net effect of this is that I can't post or reply from forums.stardock.com. This hasn't always been the case. This has gone back and forth between working and not working a couple of times, but for at least the last 2-3 weeks this hasn't worked.

This does seem to be a specific issue related to my 900 MHz POS Celeron because I don't see it at work nor do I see it on my new Intel Core 2 Duo.

Just to add on... My reply box also looks the same as Mumbles.

Looks the same as Mumbles' to me too. I first visited these forums in mid-late October, so if the format was changed before then, something didn't take.

Excessively greedy regular expressions in the bbcode conversions

Not trying to be an ass but...

I thought regular expressions were either greedy, or non-greedy, and that there was no in between.

Must be a PCP thing... errr PHP thing.

As a more constructive aside my reply boxes look exactly the same as the other's here.

Mine looks just like the pic Mumblefratz posted

Good to see someone else seeing the same.

Yes, the picture mumblefratz is seeing is correct.

Though I'm not sure how people get the bbcode to begin with anymore unless they're writing it in manually--the buttons in the post formatting bar all generate html directly, with the only bbcodes that you actually need to use being the quote tags (which do replace correctly).

kryo, that isnt correct. Higher access levels (like yours) provide advanced functionality. Most users will see the basic editor which inserts bbcode, it does not provide a wysiwyg editor.

Mumblefratz: If I could wager a guess, I would say that you're using a higher DPI on your system. Something like 120, instead of the default 90. I did some testing and was able to reproduce the whacky scrollbars on the link popup window (and on the image one too). I'm sorry, but the values for the width and height of those dialogs are fixed, and they dont account for users with higher (or lower) than normal DPI settings. That's something you'll have to wrestle with for a while.

Excessively greedy regular expressions in the bbcode conversions are a known issue.

As for the bbcode issues and the multiple links (or issues along those lines) kryo is correct; we have a few regular expressions that are being used which arent parsing correctly. It's being addressed.

Hope that clears up some confusion. The best policy with our websites is not to speculate, just wait out a response from one of the codemonkies who wrote it

Ah, it didn't look like anything that 'special' to me, so I'd thought it was that way for everyone.

Thanks for clearing up the confusion, though

Yes. I'm using 120DPI *and* extra large fonts. I am used to seeing these kinds of things though. One thing is that in that menu in particular I get the scroll bars in FF but not in IE6.

Also note my reply #26. The issue I had with the png medals is completely gone. This had been a big one for me. The item I mentioned in #27 only happens on one machine of three that I use so I doubt you'll be able to replicate it.

There should be some advantage to higher access levels besides the champagne and caviar that's served in the Diplomats and above area.    Opps. I guess I shouldn't have mentioned that here.

By the way have you seen that Microsoft has aquired FireFox.

MUMBLE! Don't freaking scare me like that.

And way to pick the live search on your screen shot... the one that doesn't look satirical.

Now if you'll excuse me, i have to wipe my bum bum. That made me crap my pants.

Sorry about that. I found this on Joe User and couldn't resist. I figured it would rattle the cage a bit. Hopefully it was worth a laugh.

Please keep this post on topic. I've subscribed to it and was bummed to find off-topic stuff. I'm doing my best to keep track of what's reported here and address it. Keeping it on-topic will definately help

Assuming that the webdev folks are still watching this thread, I just noticed an interesting feature. The Original Post can be edited by the original poster long after others have replied. However, the Title of the thread can *never* be changed even if no one has replied. As a further check I'll (slightly) edit the OP in this thread.

Correct, that is by design.

Correct, that is by design.

I assume you mean being unable to edit the title of the thread is by design, which is rightly so.

However, I would think that being able to edit the original post long after many people have replied isn't a good thing. For example I could make a post that said "I'll give $100 to anyone that replies to this post". After a couple of days and 1,000 people responded to get their $100, I could go into the original post and edit it to say "Everyone that responds to this post is an idiot". Of course this is a childish example but I'm sure you get my point.
