How do you decide on a personal icon?

How do you decide on a personal icon?

Hi. I used to be a lurker on these forums. At some point in time, I started posting replies, and even created a few posts. Then Dark Avatar beta started, and I've become even more active since.

The problem, I still haven't choose a personal icon. Without one, I appear to be some random poster. I feel that some of the information I provide seems to ignored, or not taken seriously because I'm not reconized. I really do try be helpful in my posts. I however, can't think of an icon to use.

Could anyone provide me with some insight as to how to select a personal icon?

Any woman that can carry

The Grammar Nanny says, "Please use 'who' and 'whom' when you are referring to people and reserver 'that' for inanimate matter, abstractions, etc."

Did you exceed these limits? Also there are only certain formats supported JPG and PNG but not BMP.

I've had some vexation along these lines and often wondered why the error message didn't explain what I did wrong. The "corrupted" business is almost nasty language in these wrap-me-in-security days, especially if what's really at fault is a mistake like Mumble describes here.

**Sigh**

Its still giving me trouble. I even tried creating a new icon that was all black. It also said it was corrupted.

I guess I can't worry too much about an icon if I can't even upload one.

Here use this as a test. Just point to the image, right click, save as and upload the saved file to your personal icon. If this doesn't work for you then you're doing something wrong.

How to choose a personal icon? I took this part of a picture of Jupiter because I liked it, and then I stuck with it.

By the way Mumble, I really like your Luther! It's an original.

I'm sure thats what I've been doing. I save the file to my documents, and then try to upload it as my personal icon. I tell it where it is by clicking browse. It said the upload succeeded, but the file got corrupted. Didn't you read what it said in my previous reply? Maybe I didn't make it obvious enough. I'll put what it said in the quote box.

Your upload succeeded, but the image(s) have been corrupted. Please check the file and try again.

I've tried to save the file to different locations, and then upload them, but nothing thus far has worked.

Note: Image will be scaled to maximum of 50x50 size. .JPG file format only.

Does it meet this criteria?

I looked into this matter, and it does seem as if the problem is forum-side. I downloaded the image to get a look at the properties, and it is .jpg, and is exactly 50x50. No problem there. Just for yucks, I attempted to upload to my account, and it did nothing. No error message; it just wouldn't replace my icon with the new one. You just might have to wait until the forum folk get back. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Didn't you read what it said in my previous reply

I had read your reply but I didn't really know what to make of the error message. Upload succeeded but corrupted didn't make much sense to me.

I was kind of joking in suggesting Thumper from Bambi as an icon. Who could corrupt cute little Thumper? But perhaps when someone is aggravated over what should be a simple task isn't the best time to be joking. Sorry.

Who could corrupt cute little Thumper?

We could start digressing with some rants about how wicked the brownshirt Disney was for institutionalizing the idea that nature is "cute"

As a non-coder, though, I'm still left wondering why the error message isn't a tad more precise. If the problem is a wrong file type or a file over a size limit, why not tell the user that?

The web team has clearly been working on the forums. I've noticed significant improvement in a number of areas that used to be a major pain for me. The most likely scenario is that the forums are still under construction and any issue won't be resolved until next week Tuesday, but given the recent attention the forums have been receiving, I'd expect everything to be fixed shortly after that.

As far as the digression, I do find nature "cute". Particularly when the hawk pays a visit to my wife's bird feeder and leaves blue jay remnants strewn all over. We kind of like the jays so it’s a bit regrettable, but we can’t seem to train the hawk to take the damn doves (i.e. fancy pigeons).

I attempted this same thing just the other day, albeit with just a pic I had. Browsed to the pic hit upload and the page just reloaded with no changes. Tried it a couple times. Just figured I'd try again later, just haven't got back to it.

Edit: Just tried again. No Change

Since there appears to be a problem with uploading personal icons, I'll worry about it another day. There isn't exactly anyone around worth complaining to.

I couldn't see the Thumper picture at the time when I first read your post. The picture didn't quite load right, but I can see it now. I had thought you were talking about the icon that Drengin offered. I guess I kind of missed the joke at the time.
