Gal Civ 2: GameSpy PC TBS of the Year

And the shower of praise begins

http://goty.gamespy.com/2006/pc/index14.html
Last week, we let everyone know that GameSpy was doing their Readers Choice voting for various Game of the Year categories.  The votes cast there were not for the main GameSpy Game of the Year events, just Readers Choice.  Well, today GameSpy fired off the editors picks for best PC games of 2006.  We placed #6 on the overall list, but took the gold for Best PC Turn-Based Strategy Game of the Year!

Here's a sample of what GameSpy had to say about Galactic Civilizations II:

The heart of the game's greatness, of course, is the sheer number of strategic options available to explore. Pursue better lasers for my warships or invest in more entertainment technology to pacify my rebellious masses? Should I accept the alliance with the Yor? And how will the Arceans react to that? Whatever course the player wants to follow -- perhaps being a warmonger who offers bold-faced lies about "peace" to the universe, or becoming a brain trust who uses diplomacy and superior technology to manipulate stronger, stupider beings into fighting proxy wars -- is available. Better, the incredibly intelligent AI (which plays the same game as the player) provides a credible challenge for even experienced strategy players.

At the end of the section on GC2, GameSpy goes as far to cry out:

"Master of Orion is dead.  Long live Galactic Civilizations II!"

Not a bad bit of praise

Looks like there are going to be some new awards going up on the web page!

I think the review nailed it on the head when it was said:

This seems to have borne fruit as sales for the title have been extremely robust, which seems a just reward for a company that produced a great game and did the right thing.

This game is proof that you don't have to sacrifice quality, or customer service to be successful. Cheers!

Masters of Orion isn't dead. At least you can play a multiplayer game with it on a LAN. You can't to jack with GalCivII. Granted it's a nice singleplayer game, but its multiplayer ability rates zero.

I agree that Galciv hasn't dethroned MOO, but for reasons other than the lack of multiplayer (reasons such as far better tech trees). I think that Stardock has a good chance of dethroning MOO after GC3 comes out, if they can identify the areas where MOO is better than Galciv and do something about them.

Yes well a game that can deliver the tons of depth and options that GalCiv2 delivers along with an excellent AI deserves awards such as PC-TBS game of the year. Simple as that and as others said I give congrats!

Huge Kudos to the Stardock Team - GalCivII scores high on player involvement and enjoyment, thats why it succeeds. Lets hope Dark Avatar keeps going down that Path, if it does GalCiv will start tapping on the door of being an enduring Classic Game.

Have a wonderful Christmas Stardock, you deserve every second after the great job in 2006
