One aspect of Terror Stars I'd like to see in DA

One aspect of Terror Stars I'd like to see in DA

Never did really understand the need for thread necromancy. No need to dig up a dead and buried thread, just start a new post about the topic. So instead of tacking this on to the freshly dug up Terror Stars thread, I thought I’d just start a new thread.

Anyway, I never played GCI so I've only read about Terror Stars in old posts. From what I read they were totally unbalancing. But there is one aspect of them that in my opinion would be a good addition to the game.

As they are now influence and military starbases are of limited usefulness. They can be useful in a particular area for a time, but after a planet or two has been flipped or once the battle has moved on to a new area they become useless. If these starbases could be towed then their usefulness would be greatly extended. Clearly, these things shouldn’t be flying around the galaxy like a top line battleship, but I think it should be possible to slowly move these at great expense, perhaps requiring some new tech or new type of ship to accomplish this.

Adding this feature to the military starbase in particular, could very well fit in nicely with the speed reduction that’s coming to DA. My personal expectation of the speed reduction will be that instead of WWII type blitz tank battles, wars in DA will become closer to WWI trench warfare. There are interesting aspects to each type of battle, but stalemate and a static battle line are far more likely once speed is reduced. Military starbases that could slowly move to follow the ebb and flow of battle could enhance the dynamics of what may otherwise become a rather boring game of attrition. Just my opinion.

My dad stood 5'6". He had that amazing "power of observation" as well. He never forgave me for shooting up to 6 foot my freshman year of high school.

I agree that influence & military starbases lose a great deal of their utility after the initial objectives have been met. While I don't agree that moving starbases while constructed is the way to go, if this occurs I second the thought that the action of moving them constructed should:

1. cause (or potentially cause)some damage while in motion, and

2. the support functions should be offline while moving and for the turn after.

I don't think we want to see an interlocking line (think tidal wave) of military &/or influence starbases marching (even slowly) across the galaxy.

I think the most 'realistic' means of accomplishing the translocation of a starbase is the dis-assembly option. I also think an additional cost to reconstitute the constructors to a specified configuration should be assessed. The assessment should be less than building the ship configuaration from scratch - say 1/2 of the base ship + full (or 3/4) cost of engines, as a lump cost - similar to the "upgrade all" option for ships.

Whether the act of dis-assembly effectively decrements the 'active starbase' # &/or whether the re-assembly will initiate the "you have x starbases - this one will cost y bc" routine I'll leave open for discussion.

It's not anything to do with scientology

Given today's IP regimes, that's not strictly accurate b/c Hubbard's estate is entangled with the business of scientology. It is also pretty hard to assume that a commercially successful artist's work is not influenced by his spirituality and/or business sense.

Re poor Mr. Cruise (yes, I had a teenage crush on him and yes I find him contemptible these days), I should remind this overwhelmingly straight male crowd that a good share of us who fancy us XY folks appreciate the smaller models. Two simple reasons among many good ones: 1) Smaller humans cost less to feed. 2) Smaller males can grow taller selves by dealing with the bwho-can-beat-up-whom crap that seems inevitably connected to owning a pair of testicles.

Actually I've found that "building myself up" on a foundation of piss and vinegar did quite well when dealing with the "vertically gifted" crowd. As for the rest of your post kind sir... as I said somewhere else, whatever floats your boat I guess, I just never could understand the attraction a man could have for another man, let alone the poor women who chase us. Let's face it, us men are nasty, whether well groomed or not. If I was a woman, I would chase women, I think.

I always thought Top Gun was a Gay Mafia production.

Yes, it was a joke, as in "small" talk - tiny hands, etc.

Oh.

Just looked like Mumblefratz wasn't catching it...

You're right, I didn't get it. At 5'9" I could be considered vertically challanged as well, but I do have exceptionally large hands and feet, if you get my drift.

You know Master U has been back around a little

Actually Darth Nihilus took over his ID in order to take over his empire. Most of Master U's posts got automatically converted to Darth N's but not all. I don't know whether or not this is what you're refering to.

I think Master U generated a certain level of interest around the forums that's been missing since he's been gone. It would be nice if he did return. I know I wouldn't hold anything that occured in the past against him. I think most people wouldn't either.

But the "bug" that he pointed out could probably be replicated today, but I don't think it forms a basis for moving SB's in the game. I dug it up because it was quasi related to the discussion and it was kind of funny.

Master U has recently started posting again as I'm from Freeport V. You may have seen the thread where he posted screens of a Mon Cal Cruiser model that he's just recently imported into the game.

That's good to know. He's just a kid, I think he was only 16. Between the modding and starting a successful empire, he did a lot for the community. People deserve second chances in life. I hope he reads this and realizes what happened wasn't the end of the world.

guess I was afraid of turning into a head case like Tom Cruise.

Visualizes Mumblefratz jumping up and down on Oprah's couch

Actually it's Martin Luther that you'd probably be visualizing jumping up and down on Oprah's couch, which come to think of it would be quite funny indeed.

Actually, to explain the Martian Luther thing a bit, he reminds me of my elementary school teacher. This may sound as if it's from the dark ages, but my elementary school was a single room with 40 kids, grades K to 8. The teacher was the Lutheran minister who, at least in my imagination, was the epitome of Martin Luther except with far less of a sense of humor than I'm sure good old Martin had.

Reverend Pies (pronounced peas) ruled that school with an iron fist. We learned the three R's, Luther's small catechism and a very strong fear of god. Of course, it was the Right Honorable Reverend Pies himself that generated the most fear. But behind the gruff exterior was a truly kind heart that pretty much shaped my early childhood. It's in his honor that I choose Martin Luther as my icon.

Gay Mafia

No one can be as butch as men who have nothing to do with women. I'm queer and I've never really understood those lads. But I admit to sharing the impression that "my people" are over-represented in the creative arts, and might also be a very dangerous class in the murderous arts, at least until we can burn all the closets.

The Sacred Band of Thebes is worth regular study for any serious wargamer, if only for consideration of unit cohesion and whether we'd be better off with a mixed-gender crowd. For more modern takes on scary men who like sex with other men, read up on Roy Cohn and [link="http://jcgi.pathfinder.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,964323,00.html"]Carl "Spitz" Channell. Apparently, some of us pooftahs are out to seriously out-nasty the rest of you poor sods

(Edit) I canna quick-figger the stupid tags for links, apologies.

I've commented on this before, probably on the thread you started earlier!

I agree completely. Military starbases *could* be a fantastic and interesting part of the game, but at the moment they're not even nearly worth the resources. Being able to move them, however slowly, would go a long way to correcting that.

The AI isn't good with starbases as it is, though (pre DA at least, I've not played the beta) so making them mobile may make that problem even worse. BTW, are they fleetable yet?
