Feature that would put this game over the top

Remember Star Control 2?

Remember the game Star Control 2? Besides having a superb storyline, the game was similar to galciv and moo, with one exception. When it was time to do battle, you had the option of controlling your ship, and at least had a hand in deciding the outcome of the fight. For fleet battles, maybe give the user an option to select which ship to control and automate the others, or go to a Homeworld type combat system.

This would easily multiply the fun & appeal of this game, and add a tactical dimension some of us are longing for.

Controlling one ship would add more of an 'arcade' aspect to battles. Being able to control the fleet would add strategic depth.

When I first started playing, I too wished to control my fleets. But, I actually kind of like it's implemented. Kind of forces you to look at the bigger picture instead of relying on knowledge of the combat engine to win.

Think like chess, if each player rolled a die, or did some kind of mini-game each time a piece tried to attack, you would be taking a huge part of the strategy out of the game.

This is because this is called tactical combat and is a topic that has been done to death far more times than I care to recall. Kryo has posted a sticky about these topics and there are "official" threads to be used for their discussion. Refer to the following link.

Didn't you read the forum rules? You're required to read every thread before posting! Get with the program!

Also, avoid any post with the word "carrier" or "multiplayer." I know it doesn't make any sense, but trust me on that.

Yeah... trust him.

Have to disagree here.

Bingo.

I wasn't aware I brought the topic back from death, forgive me:)

Thats why I only sighed. There are some topics around here that are very touchy. this is one of them.
"carrier" or "multiplayer."
are two others.

Check out Mumbles link to common topics and you should be okay.

You had no reason to know, but the rest of these guys know better than to pile on a newcomer for inadvertently bringing it up. Even though there were no flames thrown, it does seem that some folks can't wait for them to start. *sighs*

Nah,
thats a good idea for some. but this is a game about the big picture.
having to deal with micro managing things like that can be a drag. im glad i dont have to deal with the little things in this game

If you're having a Star Control 2 jones (which I understand completely) Mitch1003, I would suggest picking up "Space Rangers 2." I think it fits the bill perfectly, and you can pick it up for $20 at most.

"Space Rangers 2."

2 Tokens or $19.99 on SDC.

Or just download Ur-Quan Masters. Free open source (off of 3DO Star Control 2). Great fun.

Well Mortibus, it's just when I do come across space strategy games in my spare time, I just wonder why this feature isn't included at least as something optional. I wonder the same thing when I play Civ4. The game would be that much more fun if they offered an optional Heroes of M&M3 type scenario for combat. I have a feeling the computer wouldn't be taking my helicopters down with his stinkin' spearmen anymore:)

But I have read the links provided, and understand this has been hashed and rehashed, so I'll shut up for now. It was premature and impulsive to post this, and I apologize to the community.

And thanks for the recommendation, Space Rangers 2. And ty LoneWolf0912 for Ur-Quan Masters. I will definately check them out!
