Ship modelling

Hi, I was pretty sure I made a similar post like this one a few days ago but I cant find it and its not in My Posts listing. Was it removed for some reason??

Anyway I have a couple of questions regarding how you import ship models from shows like Star Trek, B5 etc? Ive played both of the mods for this game and the ships are very similar to the ones in the show.

Have someone created them from scratch with a 3D modeler program or have they used some other models as base?

How excactly does modeling work and can anyway with a 3D modeling program import models from their favourite show or does it take alot of talent to make them look as they do in the series?

Thanks

all of them have been converted from other games, no one did them from scratch ;o)

You can convert ships with many 3d model programs, you just need an x-exporter, which you can get for 3ds max as example ;o)

It functions like this way: you see a ship - you import the ship - you put on dummies - you export the ship - finish =o) it is very easy

Ah very nice but can you be more specific please.

First step is to find a ship from some "other game" and then somehow import it to a 3d model program.

How is this done? Are the models stored as files in some "other game" and I just load the file, which is in some format, and import it in the modeler program?

The second step, put on dummies. What does that mean, why is this step needed and how is it done?

Third step seems pretty straightforward, just export the model in x(?) format with the x-exporter and then it's ready to be used in GC II?

Are there any other programs you can use that doesnt cost thousands, which I heard 3ds max does?

Thanks

Yes, you have to take the right importer, import the shipfiles from other games, and put dummies for the hardpoints on it, and export it via x-exporter to .x format

take panda x exporter for 3ds max ;o)
