Game ends abruptly for no apparent reason

I started yesterday a new game, medium galaxy, randomized alot of things, Mega events on, custom race (GREAT unique abilities, by the way...please do more!).
The game went on great, but then I saw the Dread-Lords. I suggested them an economic and research treaty and they accepted. The next turn, I saw a movie. I thought to myself: "Cool! They made a movie in case you encounter the Dread Lords!" when I finally realised that I was staring at the defeat movie, and then staring at the great defeat message for no apparent reason.
I didn't know the Dread Lords were THAT powerful as to annihilate 3 of my colonies without even attacking them...
Anyway, weird...
Its not my first game, and I have no idea what caused this defeat, as everything went just fine. It appears I was wiped out, apparently.
P.S: The expansion really is amazing. Really job well done, it's enhancing the original game in every possible way! Keep up the great work!
