D.A. Play Testing beta 1a (0.10a017)

Ok, I'm getting a lot of time in this one lately. So far, it's great.

Mega Events: I'm seeing a pattern with the mega event, Plague, coming up fairly early in the game. The first time this happenned, I had tech trading option turned off. Woops! That destroyed the game. When the player gets the antidote invented, there needs to be an exception to let the player give the AI players the antidote even if tech trading is turned off. Potential problem: The AI don't seem cery interested in researching the antidote! I'v noticed this in several games wherein I was tech trading. Lastly, the Plague seems to be the ONLY mega event? What are the others? Even with tech trading turned on, this mega event might be a little too strong in terms of cost to the cure. It may need to be reduced. In my games, I had tech research bonus abilities... I can only imagine how long it would take to find a cure if I had not!

Spys. I like them! However, they are far most costly than in GCII per tech stolen. The cost would be about right if spys were not also needed for defense to snuff enemy spys. I think a base 25 percent reduction in spy cost is needed. Perhaps place a cost option for them in pre-game menu setup: normal, 25% reduced, 50% reduced. Also, it would be nice if there were a limited tech tree branch for spys: CIA Training centers, for example (spys become 25% more effective or are reduced in cost by 25%). Also, in placing syy, the planet tile information is revealed at any AI planet chosen. This is 'free' intellegence not availble normally. Perhaps the game engine should 'grey them out' until the spy has been there a few turns. I 'wish' the Spy button brought up the Spy Screen ONLY! It does only if I have no spys to 'place.'

Custom Players. I tried this first last night. I'd would be nice if there were some other images to choose from for the face of the custom AI player... instead of the lines face.

Planet Tiles: I notice the bonus items are not showing up since my last update; 0.10a017. Have these features been eliminated?

Planet Type Research: The AI is not very fast at doing this. In two game in a row, I have been able to colonize nearly every planet type: Radiation, Barren, etc. While it properly expensive, the AI seems to ignore such reseach entirely.

Campaign Menus: These are blank. Will these be added later? A map editor/campaign editor would be nice too. The old editor doesn't add asteroids and planet types (radiation, barren, etc).

Misc. I sometimes get a crash to desk top if I click on things too fast before the game engine has a chance to reply; especially if I have click TURN and the game engine is still trying to show items that need my attention, then I click over to something else or talk to an AI or reply to a pop-up.

Comment: Now that there are asteroids, perhaps the mining items for various bonus (moral, economy, etc) should be eliminate and made apart of asteroid mining as 'types of asteroid minerals' located on the various asteroids. It would make more sense.

Nothing else at the moment.

I'm playing without mods; windows 2000; ATI PCIE graphic card; max memory.

Another comment.

Troop Ships: The AI is far too sensitive to troop ships deep in my territory near NO enemy planet; sometimes going to war over them as being "too close." This didn't used to happen in G.C.II. I get forced into creating them in order to reduce planet population for better moral. Now I need to give them away or crush (delete) them afterwards to avoid wars I'm not ready for.

Thanks! I hope they show up more often than they have been. Not one planet of mine has them, nor any AI planet I've spied on. Rats. I thought it was a nice feature. Nice pic. You got really lucky on that! Lol.

Auto Build Items: In D.A. these appear on the planet screen, even the old out-of-date items! It takes a little more time now to sift through them in order to set down the desired items on the planet tiles. The new changes on the planet screen for management of such items doesn't seem to work? What am I doing wrong? I would think out-of-date items would not be mixed with the newer more effective items.

Custom Players. Got another update for GCII. If the files share to DA, then image thing is fixed, or I missed the selection arrows (woops).

On race abilties for creating a new race, these should all reset to zero, and allow the basic 10 points or more (to offset the standard embedded abilties of other standard races).

"Now that there are asteroids, perhaps the mining items for various bonus (moral, economy, etc) should be eliminate and made apart of asteroid mining as 'types of asteroid minerals' located on the various asteroids. It would make more sense".

I agree with you 100% about this. I also think you should be allowed to give your asteroid bases defensive weaponry.

Build Items - Look at the top of the list of items in the planet screen - you'll see three tabs, you are probably seeing the "all" tab by default - select one of the other two as appropriate.

I haven't encounter much problem except couple two communities issue, but haven't see any for a while.

the crash on clicking "turn" issue, I did receive it once on original beta, and never encouter the problem so far.

The starbase comment, well, I am not sure, but for small maps gamer like myself, the starbase are crucial to my strategy. Eliminate them will be stupid... especially when you play with upper AI (with Bonus). maybe I am getting the wrong idea about you talking about the micromanagement with concentrated extraction of resource in the planet, and if that is the case, I think, more people will disagree on this case, micromanagement is by far the most important strategy in resource control for upper AI games.

Having the old items to build is a great idea as i hate taking over a new planet and then try and build the newest best items right away, where if you could start with older factories as a base it make much more sense. just my 2 cents

It is working now. But I swear, the other ones (new, old) weren't earlier.

Not eliminate. You still could make them (inf, eco, mil). We're just saying mining (moral, military, etc) should be done at an asteroid, eliminate the various wierd shapes -- it would be more realistic and make more sense. Perhaps let miners add some basic weapons of defense/offense to fend off raiders and small ships.

Ok, now I have a problem and don't know what to do. The game, no mods, is refusing to proceed to the next turn. After pressing the "turn" button, it does some stuff, ships move, then it just stops... an hour passes and my turn never comes. I tried this time and time again. I restored to the "previous" save with the same result. I'd put the saved game at my ftp for someone to check to see if the problem remains, but I can't seem to find a folder called "saved games" or whatever. Any ideas?

I read the read me; it said the virtual memory needed to be 1 gig. Is this referring the the page file? The max is 4095 meg. I have it on drive C only. I just put it on the drive containing the game to see if it'll make a difference.

I'm using Win2000; Graphics: ATI Redeon 700X PCIE (upto date drvs); latest direct x.

Game Play: The Plague (again)

The Plague hit me again. Ok, this Plague. I'm "human" in a slow tech gigantic game, max players. The designers might wish to make the AI go all out in deals to acquire the cure instead of letting it's people die. So far I don't get decent offers. I took advantage of the situation, then gave it to them for the best deals I could get. It would be nice to see if they'll offer a decent amount of influence for the cure in the negotiation process as well. Also, if the player (me) offers it gratis, then the relationship with the AI should improve greatly, right? Nothing happens, but it would make sense if I at least got a nice big "thankyou" from the AI players about it.
