1st - It's BattleTech, not MechAssault. Heathen.

2nd - Gundam never leaves the Solar System. In fact, I'm pretty sure they never leave Earth's orbit. Not much room for a mod for a game based on interstellar strategy.

3rd - Both those universes are about ground combat. GalCiv2 is about civilization building and space combat.

That said, a BattleTech mod might be a good idea. Wasn't there a plan to make one, way back?

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY back.

It got scrapped way back too. Hazy on the details.

FYI, a gundam total conversion would be nigh-on impossible, as, for reasons listed, the gc2 universe is a completely different setting.

All its still around, in a way that is. In fact, I'm the Coder  What stopped us was that Spartan, (the Head Modder)couldn't scrounge up enough money for the server, and had some personal problems to deal with.
I still have the files, a bug ridden Techtree and GC2Types. If I ever get the time to fix most of the bugs I'll post it on the library.

Well If Anyone Has Played Battletech Or MechAssault 2 They Know It Is On An Intersteller Scale.

I don't know if the Battletech paradigm is quite compatible either. That setting centers around ground combat. Other than a nifty backdrop fro the ground invasion screen, there is not much room in GC2 for a mech.

Aerotech centered around small aerospace fighters and big dropships. 99% of the jumpships were just transports.

I guess it would be possible to replace the nebula backdrop with a planet surface, ships with mechs, and planets with cities/bases... but your really not going to capture the strategy of the tabletop or the action of the mechwarrior games.

I've always been a Battletech fan and as such am currently attempting (in a solo effort) a Battletech (MechAssault) total conversion, based on the game rules from Aerotech and Battlespace.

It's in the preliminary stages right now, as the changes I'm first focusing on are primarily the cosmetic ones, but I've got a good idea about how I want to modify the tech tree and ship components. The setting will be 3058, and the available nations will be the Capellan Confederation, Draconis Combine, Federated Suns, Free Worlds League, Lyran Commonwealth, Clan Ghost Bear, Clan Jade Falcon, Clan Smoke Jaguar, and Clan Wolf.

I'll post more about it when I've gotten more substantially into it.

I believe there was a prior effort for a Battletech one but I get the impression they were hampered by feature creep (like making custom models for each ship) and scrapped the project. I'm planning on staying far, far away from any custom art.

Hmm, the propulsion system in BT is also completely different, and there isn't much you can do about that. Also, weapons and defenses as they are implemented in GC are so different from the (logical) implementation in BT. The regular and naval class of weapons is more suited for SEV than for GC's miniaturization system.
As for victory conditions, I seriously doubt Clan Ghost Bear (Yay!) for example would fall to any kind of influence from any of the Inner Sphere stravags, quiaff?

Yeah I know about the propulsion system troubles. I'm basically only going to make two speeds, Jump (30 LY range), and Double Jump (60 LY range). I'm removing all the miniaturization techs, and I'm going to make the engines extra heavy and have them double as "support structure" in place of Endosteel, etc.

So give the Clans heavy cultural resistance. We know Clanners can be converted to Inner Sphere viewpoints (and vice versa) it's just very difficult.

Are you talking about Trent (very special case) or Clan Nova Cat (they follow the Star League model, not exactly the IS way of life).
But the problem is they can be "converted" to other Clans, through Trials.

As a solo modder who has played BattleTech for quite a while, I am glad to hear that there is some interest in a mod for it. I have started working on my own mod, still in the preliminary stages, and will try my best to have one completed (in my spare time).

Razius, good luck on your mod and please contact me if you would like to compare notes/ideas.

I was going to base my mod on being one of the five major houses plus some of the "minor" interstellar players. If I was able to include the Clans, they would be the equivalent to the Dread Lords. It won't be purely GalCiv2 or Battletech, but a close approximation of both.

As far as staying clear of custom art, I agree with Razius. It can kill a project (especially for a solo modder) and will try to recycle as much GalCiv2 content as possible. If I am able to include any custom ship designs, it won't appear in any first release. Even without the artwork, there is a lot of things to be incorporated into a mod.

Razius, you can email me at [email protected] to exchange ideas or comments. But, I can't check my email in a timely manner, so any delays in response are hopefully forgiven.

Actually, I was referring to the Wolf's Dragoons. True, they were freeborn, but they still pulled one hell of a 180 during the Clan Wars.

Yep, that they did.
If there ever is a BattleTech mod, I would love to help.

Not really a 180. They were not Clan really, not at the time of the Clan Wars, actually not after the 4th SW. Their doctrine and training was still Clan inspired, but their ranks were almost totally IS.
