Asteroid mines--interesting beta1 bug

All your base are belong to us

I'd post a screen cap if the Insert Image button here worked like the forum icon implies it should.

I'm semi-pro with software Q&A, so I apolize b/c this is kind of two bugs at once, but I was wondering why there wasn't a clear ID other than color for a selected mining base base, and fidget-clicked the rename area for the base.

So I retried. I seem to be able to rename AI-owned mining bases in beta 1.

Not a bug. You can also rename AI starbases, planets, ships, fleets etc.
It has always been that way.

I know that "bug" is often in the eye of the beholder, but that seems wacky to me regardless of whether it's always been that way.

If it is truly By Design, could a Stardock person explain the rationale?

It's singleplayer. It's an option. It doesn't effect the AI at all.

For example, I usually rename all the AI:s mining starbases so that I can see what they are mining during diplomacy.

Aha, at least now I can see some utility for the, um, feature, I guess.

Not that I've ever managed to talk an AI into selling me a mine even after I painstakingly made sure I knew its number.

You can call things whatever you want--the aliens will have their own names for them. Or did you think they looked up in their sky thousands of years ago, and decided by coincidence to name our sun Sol as well?

Wait... you mean to tell me Vulcans didn't name their planet Vulcan?

Yeah I use this *feature* a lot when planning my attack strategies for planets. I'll go though and rename planets things like *Man Cap Here* or *Econ Cap Here* just so when I'm finally ready to invade I don't have to scan all the surfaces again to decide where I want to hit first. For some reason it never occured to me to do the same with mining starbases but I like that idea as well. Mind if I borrow it .

That sounds much more practical than the silly stuff I was starting to think of, like "New Mgmt Soon."

Kryo's snarkiness , plus the chance of the Epic Generator going away makes me wonder if GCIII might be able to handle completely different nomenclature systems for each playable species.

p.s. I *do* wish the fields for fleet, ship, and base names were a bit longer, or at least that the UI didn't make it *appear* that you had lots of room to type.
