The Dark Avatar Beta Arrives...

News you can use...

https://www.galciv2.com/darkavatar

The BETA of Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar is available now for users who have pre-ordered it.  We are slowly processing all the pre-orders for it.  As usual, we under estimated how many people would pre-order (especially in the last week) since our estimates were based on the pre-orders of GalCiv II.  So it's going to take awhile.

There is no change log. If you've seen the changelogs of 1.1 or 1.2 and such then you can imagine how long the change log is to something we charge money for.

The features on the Dark Avatar page only go over the major stuff, there's so many changes throughout that it's going to take some time for us to get a handle on even describing them (and documenting them). For example, someone allegedly asked to have control over which tile ships leaving orbit would appear in. So it's in now. But it's not documented.

Here are a few major gameplay changes to be aware of:

  1. The combat system has been rewritten. It is now based on weapon instead of ship. That means a given ship could strike N opponents where N is the # of weapons on the ship. Logistics and cost of larger ships have been adjusted to keep fleets of small ships viable.
  2. Factories produce a LOT less than they used to. But there are now power plants that magnify production. More emphasis is being put on getting resources from asteroid fields and starbases.
  3. There will be a lot of enemy agents floating around. Even in Dread Lords there were agents in your empire, you just didn't know about them. No you actually see them on your worlds. Be wary of trying to swat every last agent on your planet at the expense of your economy.  Agents remain how you are supposed to also learn about a civ overall (i.e. if you have them on an alien world, you automatically start to learn stuff).

Here are the known issues:

  1. Alt-escaping/alt-tabbing isn't reliable. If you alt-esc out of the game, it'll likely go boom. We're working on it. (bloody evil developers always play in a window)
  2. The actual values and pacing are stand-ins. Don't get used to the economy, cost of things, size of things, or anything. What we want to avoid is anyone getting attached to how much things cost and then yell when we put in the balanced values.
  3. Please DO NOT post generated epic stories. They're only partially working and we don't have that much text in.
  4. The computer AI hasn't really been updated much. Oh, it handles spies and such but the good stuff really hasn't gotten started yet.

What we do want to hear about are:

  • Crashes. This beta shouldn't crash. Ever. If you get a crash, go to the beta forum and post your debug.err and what you were doing at the time. It would also be VERY helpful if you install Smart Exception which is in the "free stuff" area of Stardock Central.
  • Bad UI or confusing UI. Is there some way the game plays that does't make sense to you?
  • Broken feature. Is there a feature that isn't working right?

The Beta forum can be found HERE.

And if you want to get the beta and final game, you can pre-order it from us. We'll be letting people who pre-order get the beta for another week at least.  GO HERE TO GET THE BETA.

Fantastic, hopefully I'll see an email by the time I knock off and get home from work (about an hour and a half's time). Hope the download for Beta works better than my recently failed attempts at downloading Space Rangers 2 (yeah, yeah off topic!).

Wooo Hoo well done Stardock! you guys rock!

Better finish that GC 2 game.
Hey will DA boot up as a seperate program from a seperate .exe keeping GC2 as a serperate program? Or do they both become integrated?

GalCiv II and Dark Avatar are seperate programs.

You start Dark Avatar right from the module.

Hahaha, that's exactly what I was going to post. It's times like these when DSL just seems inadequate. I wanna play now!

...So what if I have school tomorrow? That's what coffee is for. :twitch:

Just played a bit (the last 2 hours   ) and my first impressions....

Wow...the planetary environments make the startup A LOT slower. You really have to pick and choose what you grab and where, THEN you have to really watch what ships you build so you are able to grab up all the available "stuff" you can before the AIs do.

Also, the new environs make diplomacy a LOT more important. IF your neighbor has the correct techs, you can get them pretty cheap. Also, they appear to be worth a LOT more than other techs so in trading they can get you more from others who don't have them....

I likey likey lots....thanks Froggy!

Ditto to all the congrats and w00ters. Excellent work being done to get the game to a beta release point.

Hell yes.  I thought this was a long forgotten item of discussion.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE "INVALID" SERIAL NUMBERS -- Go into Tools -> Register products inside SDC, scroll down to the Dark Avatar module and make sure you actually have a serial number in the text field. Some of you will see something like "[No Serial Required]" -- Which, of course, is completely false.

If you see that, request your serial numbers to be emailed you from SDC  (Tools -> Lookup Serial Number) and re-enter the serial that you get emailed.

Well I got to play for about an hour last night, and boy, the different gameplay mechanics were fun to try and figure out. I did the exact settings of a gal civ II game that I had recently played and it was definately different. I didn't crash at all, I just had some issues with hotspots when trying to click on things.

So far I'm really likeing this, thank god I found an industrial planet next to a huge asteroid field

Also I realized I need to get a jump on my planet techs before the AI. I was kinda slow on that and I only got 2 barren planets by the time I researched the aquatic (really good planet in a neighboring star system) the AI already got it by the time I was ready to send my ships out.

I noticed the beginning factories werent as potent as in gal civ II which I think helped slow that colony rush. I was running around trying to mine everything

I'll keep beating it up this weekend.

Hey frogboy, I ordered Dark Avatar a long time ago when it was 25$(don't know if it's different now)and I cancelled the credit card because I thought it was in danger of being 'compromised'.

So later, I get an email saying it didn't go through. Soooo, why would they charge it now instead of way back when?

WOW! The game improvements are huge.

Quick feedback after 3 hours of playing:

THE GREAT:
--->The beginning game is so much better like Phubar mentioned. You actually have to think about your starting strategy instead of cranking out colony ships. What a terrific and thougthful solution to have environments. You know, MOO had environments but they didn't work the same. This is a welcome addition that adds a new dimension.

--->The spies. This part really changes the late game strategy. Everyone tries to knock over the king of the hill. When I started building up to conquer the galaxy like I would in GalCiv, the spies started really wreaking havoc on me. I love how you don't know where they come from. Could be that cute Altarian chick for all I know.

---->Asteroids. I love these because it makes building up planets more strategic. It is again another big strategic choice. I also like how they will change sides based on influence. influence really matters again! Yayyyy!

---->Graphics. Not talked about but the graphics are way better than the original.

---->Candy. The ship parts, I can make so much nicer ships.

NOT TRIED YET:
---->Designer Enemies. Looks great, haven't had time to play it.

NOT SO GREAT:
---->Epic Generator still very early I can tell. It shows tags. Love the idea. If you pull off the epic generator this game should win some award beyond editors choice awards. It's a great idea but looks really hard.

---->Super abilities. I forget what I have and I can't really tell what they do yet.

---->Tech costs. Way too cheap to get to thespecial planets imho.

---->Tech screen. With all the new techs I am having a hard time navigating this screen. Listbox should show more techs at once.

---->Music. Is there new music in this? I haven't heard anything I recognized as new.

---->New intro. WIll there be a new intro video to tell the story?

FINAL NOTES:

I originally gave GalCiv II a 8/10 when it first came out. The updates brought it up to a 8.5/10 for me. This expansion pack if it makes it to its logical conclusion will put it at a 10/10. Even right now, it is simply the best expansion pack I have ever played. This expansion pack has more new game stuff than galciv II had over the first galciv. GREAT JOB!

That's the way it works--you get charged when you actually get something you can use (in this case, the beta).

Hello, i have preordered DARK AVATAR, but i have no idea, how to get the file. What must I do, to start the download. I have got an email without a download link.

did the economy system change ? can i use my factories and labs at the same time or am i still forced to fire all my scientists if i want to turn up production (which doesnt make any sense at all and is the single most important thing i'd like to see changed in the addon) ?

Hi Im in the same boat with Seucher

I preordered Dark Avatar a while ago and have the order number. So how do I now download this beta file? The only thing I see is the option to preorder.

I looked over the email notice that I received and there are no links there either that apply to Dark Avatar.

How long should it take to get the email? I pre-ordered a week ago and I'm wondering if I need to contact sales with my receipt or wait awhile longer.

Got the email, game installed beautifully, unfort I had to then run off to work, so I will have a look at it in a few hours time when I knock off, very anxious to take it for a spin, espesh after reading peoples reviews thus far...great stuff Stardock.
(yeah, yeah I know this post doesn't really add anything to this thread...I promise my next post will contain game feedback!

Oh and thanks to Stardock for - what looks like priortisation of registration emails to those of us who pre-ordered the game quite soem time ago (I'm talking months).

Cheers!
