starfighter CARRIERS mod

this would be the COOLEST thing to GalCiv2

For some reason, I dont like the idea of small starfighters travelling several parsecs during weeks...

I wonder if its possible to create a mod which would include:

- new tech tree, where you research ship docking tech/hangar bays/different sizes of hangar bays

- hangar bay modules

- impossibility of adding engines to small spacecraft

- impossibility of moving small spacecraft around the map without a carrier

- adding small spacecraft to a carrier without filling up the logistics

- use all these small spacecraft in battles

MWHAAHHAAHHA THIS MOD COULD BE REALLLLY UNBALENCED. I MEAN IF YOU GOT LIKE A MILLION FIGHTERS IN ONE CARRIER (srry bout the caps lock)

This topic has been disscussed quite a bit. It appears you're new so you would have no way of knowing but there's a dedicted thread for this topic. See Kryo's sticky.

Evil, it does appear that you're becoming quite the good GalCiv2 citizen. Now if only we could cure Wheel of his spelling fetish.

This topic has been brought up many times before, and there is an official thread for it where you can find others' thoughts on the subject.

Uhhhh, I think that is the least threatening fetish of his, wouldn't you agree?  Just kidding Wheeloffire, buddy...  couldn't resist!

Hurray for ideas that dont make sense...

If anything a smaller ship should be able to accelerate faster since it has less mass.

I dont like the how people with such little physics background can come onto forums and start talking about it as if they were proffessors.

I want a mod that:

-Doesnt allow people under the age of 16 to talk unless they have proven themselvs

-Physics filter, if you make a reference to bad physics your keyboard slaps you
(
-A search function for the forum so you can find other carrier threads... (oh wait one already exsists)

speaking as someone with a degree in physics, wow. a bit condescending?
Yes?
Especially in a game already containing so much inaccurate physics like galciv.

I don't really see why acceleration (necessarily) has anything to do with roger's request. With so many abstractions already present in the game, good physics can be found to support both pros and cons.

WWW Link Here is a link to some spec on old and current military aircraft. Take a look I'm sure you'll see my point, as the heavier slower aircraft often have 3x to 5x times the range of the smaller, faster, and more agile aircraft.

Evil Stormbringer, since you're so well behaving, maybe it's time to change your name..

A few suggestions:
- Moderately Evil Stormbringer
maybe you dare:
- Neutral or Good Stormbringer
this one, when you have completed your transformation into a Care-bear.
- Good Sunshinebringer

What do you think?

I think you should explain to my manager why I just puked all over my keyboard

Good Sunshinebringer

I don't think we need to get silly about it, but that is funny.

BTW anyone know what happened with Marcathonas. I must've missed it.

Not sure what you mean Mumblefratz... maybe he was "timed out" so to say?
That seemed to be what happened, but it wasn't obvious. He was pretty worked up in the America thread, his last post there said something about never posting here again. I hope that's not the case because overall he's a good kid. Who wasn't the "angry young man" when they were 15 anyway, I know I certainly was.

More or less.

It makes sense. The fact YOU think it doesnt make sense doesnt change anything

A smaller ship can accelerate faster but has smaller range. Not only that, but small ships cant support crews for a long time (each turn in GalCiv2 equals one week right?)

A jetfighter can accelerate faster than an aircraft carrier. Thats so obvious. But that doesnt make an aircraft carrier useless. Quite the contrary. Jetfighters have small range. Also they need a base of operations close to the fight. You dont hear about LONE JETFIGHTER fighting a battle far away from their country of origin.

Wow, I think the World´s governments also dont understand about physics, since they build aircraft carriers.

I dont like the how people with such little physics background can come onto forums and start talking about it as if they were proffessors.

Funny. You dont know NOTHING about my physics background. Physorg.com website is my default browser website. I discuss EVERYDAY in forums against moon hoax believers and other bad physics stuff (I am quite the skeptic, dont believe in spirits nor paranormal phenomena, nor in conspiracy theories).

I am 27.

Hmm... you are the one making bad refenrences about physics. Have you got your slap today?

-A search function for the forum so you can find other carrier threads... (oh wait one already exsists)

This forum is not the most user friendly forum around. Quite the contrary. I missed the search function.

Have you ever heard about nuclear pulse propulsion (Daedalus, Orion)? Proposed in the 50s and capable of reaching around 10% of lightspeed (fission), 50% (fusion) and 80% (anti-matter/matter reaction). If US government funding to this sort of propulsion had not been cut down to invest heavily on a worse (but easier to dominate fastly) propulsion method, that of common chemical rockets, which was done so US could reach the moon before the commies, humanity would probably have already reached jupiter moons in the 70s (as far as all project cronograms indicted).

Anyway, in nuclear pulse propulsion, the LARGER the ship, the better. Thats because in space, unlike in air (again it seems you dont know much about physics) you must carry all the propellent inside the ship. The ideal ship size for a Orion or Daedalus ship would be hundreds of meters in size with a few hundred thousand tons of mass.

Such ships would be able to reach Barnard´s Star in 10 years.

Now... a small ship would NEVER have enough propellent to be able to acelerate to near light speed velocities and reach another star.

The big lumbering ships would need to accelerate for weeks/months to achieve big speeds, and they would sit ducks in a space battle, if another big ship deployed small agile fighters.

So there goes all your stupid theories and bashing.

Next time, think better before saying someone else doesnt know about physics.

Rock on Roger.

I hate it when I see someone try to prop up their argument with half truths they picked up from a discovery show on physics (All fairness, TheProgram probably did take a class or two). I thought I would throw my two cents in, but it seems you've got it plenty well covered.

Anyways, I'm just gonna dissappear back into the internet, I'll talk to you all again in another year or three.

Thanks Nomo Mo. Maybe next time we talk, we will have already built space elevators around Earth. (for space elevator news, visit liftport.org ! These guys are planning to deploy a nanotube space elevator by 2030...)

ps: I said in my earlier post that ships using nuclear pulse propulsion would be able to reach Barnard´s Star in 10 years. Maybe. More probably, they would take some 40 years. Much better than Voyager of course

I'll miss seeing him get frustrated over the carriers and planetary bombardment topic. You'd think he was a psycho, which might be true.
How about this, if you dont like the idea of carriers, you dont read the threat with the heading "starfighter CARRIERS mod". Does that make any sense for you? What about this...the fighter accelerates faster....gets to the battle....fires off, lets say all 20 of it's missiles, then takes 2 weeks to return to base to rearm...HOORAY FOR ORDINANCE MINDED IDEAS!!!!

I want a mod that everytime you try to be a troll and flame someone your computer squirts battery acid into your eyes and mouth.

Mumblefratz: you're one of the most diplomatic and well spoken posters on this forum [hence your title] and I wish we all could be a little more like you.

But we are who we are and yes I was being facetious in regards to Maxi's absence.

Wouldnt a viable solution to all this be to make Military Starbases a so called immovable Carrier- docking station etc??? no ability to build but repair, starport, upgrades etc??? Keep them the same just add the ability to dock ships up to a limit..
Would add another element to the game I think trying to defend these in enemy territory and defend against. Of course ships would still have to travel to the starbase, adds a strategic element of getting them there
Reply #24 Top
but i guess the purpose of carriers would be to make the game more realistic... that is... small fighters without the capability of travelling one entire month to do one battle and then returning to rearm.
