I am trying to work on one, but finding useable models is becoming next to impossible.

You can't simulate the BSG setting in this game engine. You could only model the ships.

Mods i don't know about, but i myself am making (what i have determined to be) the first Battlestar Galactica Model for GC2. More Info Here.

I am 100% behind a BSG mod. But I hope it has Cylon as well as Colonial ship models included. Even if the setting can't be remade, imagine a fleet of heavy raiders doing war with your enemies. Pretty freakin' cool.

you could simulate the origanol war even tho it isn't spoken of much in the series i would assume just model ships off of the old show although that isn't the origanal war

Well I am happy sort of. I found a tool on the web that lets me convert lightwave files to 3d max. The probelm is that its just a demo version and it cuts out like every fifth mesh or something. If you look close you can see what I mean. Looks like someone took a pair of sissors to it but other than that it looks good to me.

Oh, and also, i recognize the mesh in your pic AggieJohn, i doubt Wil Jaspers gave you permission to use it in this manor. You do know it's illegal to just take a mesh, convert it, and use it right?? Not to mention that particular mesh is over 400,000 polygons. Which is crazy insane. You either have to have permission to use it, or make one yourself, like i am. Otherwise, if you put that mesh on the web, you could get into a lot of legal trouble. Not to mention it's going to clog any computer down to a hault with that many polygons.

What you are doing is exactly why people don't release the meshes they create any more. People usurp them from a website they think no one else visits, convert the mesh, slap it in a game half-assed, and call it their own. Well that's ILLEGAL, and just NOT RIGHT. Especially to people, like me, who are pouring time into making things the RIGHT way. The bottom line is, you can't do what you are doing.

And if it sounds like i'm coming down hard on you, well i am. Because i'm tired of people doing what you are doing and ruining any sense of sharing that used to go on between talented model makers. What you are doing is tantamount to larceny.

@ LogicSequence I know to give credit where credit is due. Trust me when I say this I would never use a model someone else created with out their permission. I agree its wrong and unethical as far as I was concerned I did have permission to use this model, though I admit I could be wrong? I did not take this model I am a member of the Colonial fleets forum and these models are share by all it is converted from the individual you mentioned. If your right I would never use it in that fashion in respects to the creators wishes.

I agree with some of the things you said. But wouldn’t it be better to talk to AggieJohn offline instead of berating him publicly? It’s called the ready fire aim syndrome. It’s always best to find out the whole story before making comments.

You are exactly right about asking permission before using someone’s work. The modeler put in a lot of time and energy into their creation so it’s only right to ask.

It’s unethical not illegal. No more illegal by you creating something from the TV show Battlestar Galactica. Did you contact the company that owns Battlestar Galactica? So please be careful when throwing out the word illegal.

As far as the ruining the sense of sharing in the modeling community, that simply is a little overdramatic. There are tons of forums dedicated for modelers to share their work. If you’re worried about people misusing your work, don’t release it.

That’s my two cents. Take it or leave. Doesn’t matter to me. By the way there are a lot of good BSG models out there to use. I have converted many of them with the permission of the owners.

You are right about it being unethical, but you are wrong when you say it's not illegal. That model is copyrighted by the owner. That means using it in the way aggiejohn is, violates international copyright law. Ergo, it's illegal. Believe me, I know a little something about this, as I copyright my work all the time, to try and prevent these types of situations.

Now comparing that to creating something based on the TV show battlestar galactica, that's two very distinct and separate things. The art, and specifically the model, of the battlestar galactica used for the show is copyrighted material by ZOIC studios. But I’m not using that, I’ve made my own mesh, based on visual observations freely licensed by ZOIC via broadcasting them on television.

Now, yes, I am using the intellectual property of battlestar galactica as held by universal studios, HOWEVER, as I am not receiving profit or personal gain by doing so, I am not breaking any trademark laws. And as I’ve stated before, I’m also not using any materials copyrighted by any other party. So in short, my use of the word illegal was well thought out, because that's exactly what it is.

Now as for ruining the sense of sharing in the modeling community, it's not that overdramatic. It's exactly what's happened over the last few years, as more and more people have pirated other people’s works for their own benefit. And it IS precisely why people choose not to release much of their work any more. And I’ve been doing this type of work for over 6 years, I’ve seen it happen, and I’ve seen the progression from free and open sharing, to the tight-lipped holding back that's done today. Is it all aggiejohn's fault? No of course not, but its people, like him, who are doing things like he has done, that have vastly contributed to it.

Sorry man we’re going to have to agree to disagree on this subject. I’ve been part of the modeling scene for a while so I know what I’m talking about. No one is going to sue over the usage of a model. Say for example someone uses a Star Trek ship that I created. If I sue that individual CBS Studios is going to be all over me. The majority of modelers agree that people using your work is just a risk you’re going to have to take.

I’m part of three modeling groups that share work with anyone that would like to use it. Yeah some people get ticked about their models getting used without permission but there is very little we as modelers can do about.

Sorry that’s just reality. I’m not going to discuss this anymore on the forums. If you want to discuss it further, send me an email.

What have I done to so upset you? I am not trying to steal things? I am just a fan trying to help to combine two things I love (BSG, star wars, star trek) and Galactic Civ II. I downloaded that model from a public forum that shares its models, it was not even the original model you speak of. I wish it was cause the original is in max format not lightwave. But if you right I had no idea. I have been working with the warlord models from homeworld II and the creators have encouraged us to use them, just give credit, which I indent to do when we release our Alpha mod.

I just want to help fans enjoy their favorite ships in a great game. If I angered someone in the process, that was not my intent. You do great work as a modeler, I am not a modeler, the best I can do is add hard points do alittle mesh editing to make ships work in game and so on. I would love to take up the hobby but I am a grad student and dont have the time. I am a modder, and it took me hours to convert that file and do all that is required to make it work in the game. I do it to enrich the community. I want to shared these ships proudly, giving credit and allowing all to enjoy the fruits of some many good peoples labor?

I am not in it for the glory just to be nice to others. I think you got me wrong. I was shocked to think that someone thought of me a a theif. If I implied that was my model then I have been misunderstood. Like I said I dont have the skills to create something from sratch.

If you want to talk about this off line you can reach me at [email protected]. I dont want any hard feeling on this point. I just wanted to help.
