What are "resources" supposed to be?

hi, this is my first post and i haven't played the betas or anything, but i've been lurking for a bit and i've read through all the encyclopaedia docs. i think this game looks amazing, but i have one nagging question.

my question is this: what are the "resources" supposed to be? i think understand what they do and how they affect the game, but i feel it's important that there be some kind of reason or rationale to have these magical "resources" floating out in the middle of interstellar space, rather than them just being a blatant strategic element with a superficial explanation (i.e. these resources contain a "special type of fluid"). are they abandoned precursor technology? mineral rich asteroids? something else?

anyway, i'm sure i'll stop caring once i start playing, but i feel it may hurt the internal sci-fi "logic" of the game.

cheers

I think I posted about this before.

If you know your Tolkein, it's hard not to trip on names like "Arnor" or "Mithril"ar etc.

Brad isn't the frst and won't be the last to be seduced by the wonderful naming of Tolkein.

Pop, from this and other posts I'd say we probably play the exact same game. I was so pissed in my last game because the damn Altarians were so close to me that I HAD to go straight for military power or else my expansion would have been stifled...annoying. Because I much prefer to be the economic force who can bring a dominant military into being with the snap of my fingers, but until I need it I don't bother building it and paying maintenance. It was the first game I was actually struggling for cash in a long time.

Fortuneately by the end of that game, my people were busy mining 3 sites worth of red cones...

...heh Red Cones, Blue Cubes, Green Balls and Purple Horseshoes...Frosted Lucky Resources. They're magically delicious.

True, I forgot about that. Thought you were saying the storyline was Tolkeinish, and now that I think about it, it is in a way LOL.

"Brad isn't the frst and won't be the last to be seduced by the wonderful naming of Tolkein"

if you think tolkein [may he rest in peace] was completely original himself, think again. brad is not stealing or copying tolkein, lucas, roddenbury, or any other sci-fi/fantasy giant. he's simply following their paths. just as they created vast and wonderful stories, so has brad. and just as they built upon and incorporated bits and pieces of mythology and prior works, so has galciv.

examples? sure:
--GEORGE LUCAS--
*endor: happens also to be a biblical location.
repackages terran concepts: nerf-herder=shepherd; sabacc=poker; funky gametable in the falcon in episode IV=chess
*classic good vs evil dichotomy... harsh black & white symbolize evil while softer, organic colors indicate good

--J.R.R. TOLKEIN--
*elves, goblins, trolls, frost giants etc: built upon numerous prior sources, especially nordic/celtic mythology
*very familiar theme of battle between good and evil, utilizes characteristic descriptions for each.
*final battle carries undertones of armageddon/ragnarok: end of an age. death of the gods.

--GENE RODDENBURY
bases his universe in our future, making for a very fluid (and easy to write) backstory.

these are only a few examples out of many possible. none of these are meant to in any way disrespect the aforementioned creative geniuses. the intent is merely to illustrate how galciv has created its own unique storyline--much like the above stories--but has followed a long tradition of incorporating certain common elements and themes, yes even names, as part of the process of creation.

for humans, creation without some element of synthesis is impossible... even God used dust to put man together.

Wow, lot's of Tolkein in there
End of quote

I had the same response to those couple of sentences! The elvish-sounding names are probably to blame, since the only parallel to the story of Illuvatar (and the Jehovah/Lucifer story) seems to be the one bad apple concept. There doesn't even seem to be a central figure since Telenath and Draginol don't sound like individuals on a closer reading, so it's probably really similar at all.

Still, I eagerly await the GalCiv sequel, The GalCivilmarillion! ;)

Sorry, completely unrelated question here, although I gotta say I dig the background story...

Alright, maybe I'm mental but what's the deal with the star creation and planet creation technologies??? I've got 'em both but I can't build anything with them! I'm running out of planets to colonize man, and I need the income if I'm going to bring all other worlds under the ruthless domination of the Terran Hegemony!!

You can't really do anything with those techs, they're just stepping stones in humanity's path to omnicience/omnipotence (tech victory). If you read the full descriptions of the techs (which are just flavor) you would see that they all say that it isn't really practicle to use them for anything. (You only know how to make useless White Dwarf stars, you can't make a planet unlessy you have a planet's worth of material, it wouldn't be habitable anyway, etc.)

Interesting story ... but I will now ask for the answer to two puzzling anamolies (sp?):

1) How on earth did Horatio2 earn a "Veteran" status when it's his very first post???!!! ;)

2) I notice that Frogboy's empire logo (I believe it is the Arnor Empire logo) is the same logo that quickly flashes on my PC screen when I first turn on my PC (even if I never fire up GalCiv). Is this some kind of spyware or something? :notsure: >:(
