Late Idea: Mini missions

"Hey mack, do me a favour wouldya"

How about, when you reach a certain relation level with another race they start asking you (and vice versa) for favours. It could be just like trade, ie "Please defend (planet/starbase) for (number of weeks) in exchange for (you pick)" or "Please escort (this ship) to (this destination) for..." etc etc.

It could also work the other way, you could ask your allies to defend one of your planets or escort a "Got to be there no matter what" colony ship. It could make the other races seem a lot more friendly and also realistically simulate the comraderie between friends and allies (Unless you ask for too much in exchange and they say "Stuff that we'll ask the Drengin")

I always thought sub-missions or mini missions or quests would be a good idea. Kind of a game within a game. You could also use these type of missions to further your relations with say a race that does not look to kindly on you. Could be used in a form for political gain as well.

Good idea I think.

These kinda things are already kinda in DA already via mega-events. But it would be nice to have more variety in normal events

The spies or "sabtoage agents" is kind of a mini mission onto itself, but yeah more mini missions to keep the repetitiveness of the game to be a little bit more tolerable.

I believe I like this idea! It reminds me of the "campaign" feature in Imperium Galactica 2, back in the days of yore -the game had a million bugs, but the idea of completing mini-quests that occured (randomly or not) as time moved on, leaving you with some form of prize of advantage, was intriguing (and quite challenging, at least in 'hard').
An option I had found quite successful was that of owning an actual pirate fleet, after taking over a pirate planet as a minimission. You could use it to attack other empires, and they would not declare war immediately- it would just make your relationships deteriorate a little at best (presumably by learning rumors that the pirate fleet was actually run by you). Now something like that would be great, if implemented in DA for an evil manipulating race!
Then there's all kinds of ideas that can be used: A mission that would help to improve relations with another empire, to make them accept an alliance, or even to end a war that's going bad for you... A quest to recover an extremely powerful Precursor artifact from a (previously uninhabited) world, protected by a berserk race of zealots (it could work in the same way as the "new minor race" event does)... And, if someone beat you to it, a race to stop an enemy convoy from delivering that artifact to the enemy homeworld, to stop them from gaining its power.
Also things like: Subduing rebellions; Sabotaging treaties between your enemies; Building (or destroying) a specific starbase that randomly aquires a certain benefit- and draws the enemies' attention; Destroying a newly opened portal by the Dread Lords (getting a survey ship in a special anomaly that is protected by a -slowly increasing?- number of Dread Lord ships)... The possibilities are endless!

Sounds a bit like the Senate missions in Rome Total War, The senate would periodically tell you to go invade city/blockade port/whatever and give you X turns to achieve it. Succeed and be rewarded, fail and recieve a fairly minor penalty like a small knock to your popularity with the people/senate.

Missions/ mini-missions options would be interesting in a game.

An emperor, or a ruler of a major civilization, do need from time to time, to personally, and actively handle matters of great interest to him/her in the form of missions, rather than the usual, passivelyu choosing yes, maybe, no, or good, neutral, evil decisions for the random planetary events. Please add this as an option.

After completing a mission, reward can be increase in influence, extra cash, extra ships, extra bonus (production/research, military ground/ship attack, defend, damage, armor, speed, espionage bonus), extra planet, new technology, new planetary improvement etc...

There are a lot mission ideas and is only limited by the imagination. We should have this as an option enabled or disabled for the game, once enabled, there will be ramdom missions coming up from time to time, depending on what triggered it, though, player may or may not have to accept and fulfill the mission. If mission is rejected or not fulfilled, there will be mostly likely a penalty that will also depend on who issued, or who requested the mission.

If the mission is from an ally, failed mission means lower relation, break of alliance or at times declare war too. If it's from a wealthy merchant, failed mission may mean no extra jackpot cash bonus. If it's from a good aligned civ, and you are a good aligned civ as well and you didn't help, your alignment will lean towards evil. etc...

Yeah just like Ugleb mentioned Rome Total War was has this mini missions in the campaign. Medieval 2 Total War continues this mini-mission tradition too. And it would be nice if it's in GalCiv2..., DA

Capitol idea! I'd love to see a feature like this in the game. Make things more interesting.

I could also see this feature being used to ambush an opponent. Like "I need you to send x amount of your best ships to y planet for protection" and then send transports and a fleet of escourts to invade their key worlds while their best ships are on their way to your planet... where they will be outnumbered more than 2 to 1 in a surprise ambush.

The other races should recognize this kind of treachory so that these kind of tactics cannot be abused

I like the idea, but seems more suited to an RPG than a strategy game, but then again, I love RPG's almost as much as I love a good strat game.

Also seems like a lot of work for something that many might consider distracting. I mean, you're really talking about a whole new element to the game. It would require a certain amount of trust in the race asking the favors and allowances by other races so you could complete the mission (or their interests in preventing the completion).

The other issue here is whether or not the other races would get these mini-missions as well. This might occur while you are spying on them (or maybe they're jsut a trade partner where one of your freighter captains overheard some rumors he wanted to pass along to you) and you find out about it and want to either assist becuase they are a friend (or you want them to be), or you want to diminish their standing with the Galactic Council or whomever assigned the mission to them. These could obviously just be their missions that you heard about to make your own decisions on, or they could be missions that you are given as well to prevent them from completing.

I really like the concept, just that it might be overwhelming to the devs and potentially to players. Obviously a gameplay option to turn off these events/assignments would negate the player-distraction issue though.

Yes it would really really be nice to have mini-missions (and also the space monsters), except that as Robert Foley mentioned above, it can get quite complicated or overwhelming to the developers, as for players, they should have the option to enable it or not this feature.

Also this extra feature will add more memory demand on your system as the program needs to load this missions in memory to keep track of your mission, or/and other civ's missions as well.

So if it's too complicated to be added for the official release, I say just don't add at all. It wouldn't be nice to have a half-baked feature on the game, a lot of people who really expected this feature will be disappointed. So if the mini-mission can't be added as a complete major feature of the game, then don't add at all. It will only taint the otherwise awesome game.

With only a month to go, it may not be enough time to add a mini-missions, or play test it, report bugs, and fix the bugs before the release. I guess just polish whatever you have in the BETA and get ready with the release.

The Warlords series (e.g. Warlords Battlecry, Warlords: Darklords Rising, etc.) was very successful in doing quests, which were basically mini-missions. They were fun indeed, but they added a role-playing element, and I don't think Galciv2 needs a role-playing element added in.
