autoplay to work?

I saw in the wiki how to enable cheats and the key combo (ctrl+shift+z) to enable autoplay but it does not seem to do anything.
I know cheats are enabled because the ctrl+m adds 10000 bc.

Any ideas of what I am doing wrong?

You need to select another race's ship. Pressing the code then will switch your control to that race, and the AI will take over yours (at least it should). The game does not actually play itself.
