Why doesn't ship life support add up like I think it should?

I've noticed that when I put life-support of different grades onto my ships that the numbers don't add up. For example:

I have a Colony Ship that starts with a base range of .4 I add "Extended Support" which stat lists a .7 parsec bonus, but when I actually put it on the ship the new ship stat shows the ships range is 1.5

I don't understand why it is 1.5 instead of 1.1

I'm sure I'm missing some math somewhere because General Life Support has a .4 difference as well. Can someone please explain why this is?

Thanks!

Another thing I've noticed is that sometimes the range changes by .1 after I upgrade engines in a design without touching the life support at all. Some kind of rounding error, perhaps.

I think engines give more life support too, think of it logically if 2 ships travel that has the same size and crew, but one is faster than the other, the one that is faster can travel further before a refill.

You've got to remember that this is a game and may not be made to represent the real world.

Of course it isn't the real world, but it is a world unto itself, and understanding how and why things work the way they do is how you win.

Not sure about this but I think that Map Sizes might Effect it a little. Also did you have any bonus to Race attributes?

I know that range component effects are multiplied depending on the size of the map, but the modified value should be what shows up in the component description. The 'range' race ability is applied after you build the ship, it doesn't show up at all in the shipyard. Does the second support component you add give another difference of .4, or does it add the correct amount? Also, is it still a .4 difference on maps of every size?

no look at the tech descriptions on the tech screen. you'll see a

range +20

ability in addition to the new ship components.

The ranges are definitely affected by map size. I do not see the map effect showing up in the component description ( basic life support description ). However the effect does show up in the ship description.

Just start a game with a tiny map and another game with a gigantic map.
Create a colony ship in both games that has 4 basic life supports.
The differences are huge; 2.0 sector to 5.9 sector
And if you actually build a ship in each they have a bit more range; 2.1 sector and 6.8 sector.

I've never seen this well documented but that's pretty much how it works.
I've never really tried to figure out all the intricacies of how ranges work, just use the range circles for my ships to plan my in game startegies.
However I am pretty sure that the engines have no effect on ship ranges.

It has definetely changed from patch 1.20 to 1.30 or 1.31 (don't know, because I updated from 1.20 directly to 1.31).

See here please:

life support math as it was in v. 1.20

and as it is since 1.3 or 1.31

I made a post one month ago to this and other issues, but got no answer until now.

P.S. Both pictures are from gigantic map size.

The 1.2 screenshot seems okay, it looks like the map size multiplier is no longer being applied to the component description in 1.31. Definately a bug, in that case.

You could probably just work around this by adding the correct value into the text part of the description, the actual stats seem to be okay.

What confuses me a bit is that in my Gigantic map game,,my 21 pc ships cannot travel any further than my 11 pc ships.

Any hints?

Add life support units to get more range.
Add engines to get more speed.

Speed and range are not related.

There is also a hard cap on range, although it's not shown in the stats. I think it's to make starbases more tactical on larger maps.

Perhaps I should have expressed myself clearer...

I play on gigantic/huge maps.
At midgame, my Trader/transports typically have speed/range ~45/20 since I like them to be able to get everywhere,,and that fast

However,,they often cannot travel much further than the ships that have a range of ~11.

The suggested hardcap would certainly explain why I'm not allowed to make those deep strike insertations

Yep I believe you are well pass the hardcap on range.

You can just put in some starbases to get more range. I like the economy starbases as the AI takes no offense from them as best as I can tell.
